God changes them to have a fighting chance. On a more serious note: Evolution. Bacteria reproduce much faster than humans or animals, so they evolve more rapidly. Random mutations may make specific bacteria resistent to antibiotics. If this happens incidentally, it's not really an issue, but if anti...

The Mother can have the baby removed but it should be transferred to an artificial womb. And then what? Who will care for it after birth? There are already many kids without parents going from fosterhome to fosterhome. And unfortunately, these kids often do not get the same opportunities in life as...

In addition, the movements made by the fetus are reflexes. There is no personality behind them yet that goes "Gee, that light is annoying, if I move my arm like this I can block it." Fetuses and newborns have a ton of different automatic reflexes that help them survive and cope with the environment....

The difference between saying "God bless you" and "Merry Christmas" is that the first is habit, as puddingmouse said, i.e. it often just slips out of your mouth when someone sneezes and you don't think about it, while the second is a deliberately spoken sentiment that has thought and purpose behind...

In the Dutch political spectrum, I'm mildly liberal, but strongly progressive. Of course this requires further explanation as some terminology is completely opposite between the EU and US. In context of European politics, liberalism is the right-wing socio-economic philosophy with reduced government...

Forget income tax and just go with a federal sales tax and be done with it. Sales tax only is a terrible idea, because it means that the wealthiest people pay a lower percentage of tax than the poor. Since poor people have to spend almost all their money on goods and services to get by, their effec...

Of course the radiation that microwave ovens produce is dangerous. I wouldn't recommend putting a living object in it unless you intend on killing it. The microwave radiation heats up any water present in the object in the oven, so any biological tissue is very efficiently heated up. The radiation f...

I've taken the liberty to mangle your figure: http://i48.tinypic.com/6t2zag.png As the poster above me mentioned, the lines AC and BC make a 90 degree angle with the tangential lines. Angle ACB (this notation means: the angle at point C between lines AC and CB) is double that of the indicated 43 deg...

Electroencephalograms are quite accurate as far as I know, they don't measure conscious thought, per se, but they do measure brain activity to a high degree of accuracy. And brain activity is a much, much better indicator of thought than how human-like something looks anyway. It doesn't take comple...

I've thought about abortion a lot recently, I think what people forget there isn't just one party to it. You have the mother but there is also the father and most importantly the child whose life hangs in the balance. A man can't force a woman to get an abortion but we as a society demand that he s...

If you are so in favour of giving every potential child a chance at life, surely you also object condoms, the pill, and other forms of family planning? There's a difference between single cells and developing organisms. I highly doubt sperm cells are capable of any kind of consciousness or independ...

The world is overpopulated as it is. Life is really not as valuable as people claim it is. If the human population would be halved, the world in general would be better off. You list a number of positive qualities that someone could have in their life. This is too much of a rose-tinted-goggles outlo...

I see it as a tax on the poor and those who cannot do math. Which is the typical statement you see from people that don't know much math (or in particular: game theory). The point is that the utility-function (= how much you value it) of money is not linear. That means that for almost all people, f...
