1-2 months for most evaluations and 6 months for a really bad one (based on my assessment and those of my children). |

I have a Tibetan neighbor. In her community in Tibet, Autism was more socially accepted than here in the U.S., however other ways of being were more stigmatized. I have a friend from another Asian country and it just seemed bad all around. I find studies about cultural differences this includes subc... |

I relate to women who can have deep sometimes intense conversations. Maybe as we mature NT women are able to have more intense conversations and ND women are able to have less intense conversations. I didn't relate to girls and women until I met more female professionals (mostly ND) and had ki... |

During our dark days, my allistic (not Autistic) husband used to say "who thinks that way?" or "nobody would do that!" in his frustration when we didn't understand each other. I could have said the same to him, but unfortunately I knew most people think the way he does. So now 20... |

Prior to my diagnosis, I have jumped a foot off the table, I have cried uncontrollably, I have shutdown and gone mute. Now with my diagnosis, for physical aspects, I strive to have my expectations set (will it be a pinch, numbness, pressure). For emotional, I strive to set their expectations (time t... |

Oh, I thought mirror neurons explained my out-of-control empathy which lends itself to shutdown (flat affect) or meltdown (overreacting). In any case, independent of Theory of Mind stuff. Sure, I might not know the superficial motivations, but I swear I understand the underlying reason for others' b... |

You're absolutely right if you're just seeking a diagnosis without spreading the word and thinking she's special. I'm not sure how you mean that, but she's Unique Like Everyone Else. Having ASD myself, I definitely have a hard time giving the "correct" answers - since it's "no... |

I have a friend who hired a virtual assistant who she has only every worked with online and that person is her trusted executive function support. How does that work? Do you mean the person counsels them on how to improve their EF? Or do you mean that person does their EF tasks for them ... by remo... |

The second evaluation for my daughter came back "F43.23 Adjustment Disorder, With anxiety (mild)" and not Autistic. Flashback to my journey of misdiagnosis and my mom's journey of misdiagnosis and my grandmother's journey of misdiagnosis. Now my (female) BFF is afraid to try. Crap. This cl... |

To find a qualified reliable medical care provider is super hard, but I imagine it can be done. My spouse is my "caregiver", albeit it's mutual. I could not have sustained the lifestyle I have (job and children) without an actively supportive partner. He is executive function support 100%:... |

...But, I'm right-handed! I wonder how much being left-handed would've shortened my lifespan. Power tools and dangerous equipment are designed for right-handed people so I can see where accidents could be a problem for lefties. But, is there a cure for left-handedness? Would lefties want the cure? ... |

Good point. Ask. A letter format might work well. I find I am fairly non-verbal in the face of high emotions or conflict (I'm learning just now -at 50- to take my time to respond - "I'm trying to figure out..."). |

I consider being left-handed a high risk to my longevity than ASD. If I have my way, I'll live to be 100+. There are lots of elderly folks who were not diagnosed who aren't in the statistics. My ASD grandmother (not diagnosed) lived to her 90s. My ASD mother (not diagnosed) is nearing 80. My MIL (no... |

I dislike that I spend so much time accommodating others (NT style) and they spend very little time accommodating me (ASD style). Seems to me we could split the difference more. I took my kids to a sensory-friendly theatre performance this summer -they have those now our way- and it made me so teary... |
