I completely agree with OP. My allistic husband is constantly trying to turn lights on for me b/c of his concern that I can't see and am damaging my eyes. Ummm, I'm very comfortable, thank you. He is hypo sensitive and has put in nasty bright lights wherever he can. I installed a dimmer in the livin...

Yes, there is evidence to show that the more light humans sleep with, the less their brains get to rest and recharge. It's only recently that we've had lights on at night e.g. streetlamps. Probably 200 years or so? Before then it was dark at night apart from the moon and stars. We need the dark to ...

I imagine there is so much that you are adapting to and accommodating that it's frustrating to you as ONE MORE THING. Why don't folks do the same for us? I make an effort to pronounce a name as the person themselves does (thinking of African and Indian and even Italian-descent coworkers, Tibetan and...

I am going to take the subject line as an invitation to fill in the blank b/c I have been thinking about this a lot recently. (1) Why do people with autism not get believed when they... tell doctors and nurses what they suspect is going on (and are correct) and it is dismissed to the detriment of th...

I know that when someone says it's raining cats and dogs they simply mean it's raining hard, but I still have the visual image of cats and dogs falling so I always have that "pause" moment for idioms. NTs are more likely to take an idiom at face value and not think about it.

Pros and Cons. The poor empathy or unexpressive folks may struggle that way but are identified and can get help (if it's available and useful which is an entirely different topic), the high empathy or expressive folks may compensate but currently aren't identified and don't get help (assuming it wer...

LOL For being direct and blunt, I'm the queen of avoidance as much as any person. The difficulty is that it's hard for many of us to ignore input. Walk into a store and see Everything (and miss the Thing). Walk into a party and hear Everything (and miss the Thing). A friend making demands and feel E...

Wonderful, I could have watched more. I didn't cry (I'm still resentful about recent misdiagnosis of my daughter) but I teared up - because Truth. I'm sharing this with my ASD groups.

Maybe try the empathy and sympathy and leave off the hope? Oh a rainy day is miserable isn't it. I had one of those days yesterday. Thanks Sharon :) I could, but then it would feel like I'm turning the conversation back to myself and my own needs: 'I had one of those yesterday' sounds like I want s...

Contracting is my fall back. Always leads me to something. Are you are already volunteering and working gig or part-time jobs? I do that and although they are unrelated to my field they often lead to something. These things help build or maintain some momentum. Many of us tend to get jobs b/c people...

Maybe try the empathy and sympathy and leave off the hope? Oh a rainy day is miserable isn't it. I had one of those days yesterday. Even in my ASD group, things I or others say in support are sometimes taken the wrong way. Like you said it doubly hurts. However, my group is face-to-face and we apolo...

My NT dad is super into baseball and was convinced to join a virtual league competition thing. He couldn't be bothered with it, so my 75-year-old Autistic mother who doesn't watch sports took it over --- she ended up winning the whole thing in his name. She was always genius with information systems...

Now it's called the double blind theory. Autistic folks don't think like NTs and vice versa. Take my sister and I for example. When my sister said with obvious disgust ---- "What do think of that smell?" I was like phew! she's also bothered by the excessively perfumed bed sheets. But noooo...

So sorry for the multiple hardships. It's tough when there are difficult simultaneous demands. Autistic aside (I know you don't feel well, so bear with me): I happened to look at your post when you have 44 posts and you say you will soon be 44. I like silly coincidences like that. I do not like when...
