If you've met one autistic you've met one autistic. I have been formally diagnosed as meeting the criteria for ASD-1 and the evaluation report notes I would've met the older criteria for Asperger's Syndrome. This diagnosis is consistent with my reality; if you got to know me I think you'd see my AS...

I think people in the past before HFA was considered a disability were more accommodating of middle class guys who in this day and age would be considered HFA/disabled. I think society has gone downhill in terms of its lack of structure. I wish we could live in a world as distant and formal as the ...

The topic is about AS, a diagnosis that excludes "serious intellectual disability". The same rules apply just remove ID, the world is built on capitalism which is Darwinian in nature. Those who are most able will get the best jobs form the most relationships and earn the most money. Those...

I say the 99% is unlikely to change dramatically to suit us 1% that’s just the way it is. I don't know how it looks where you live, but here we're building ramps, lifts, installing Braille captions, sound signals at traffic lights for pedestrians, etc. Apparently, my city council didn't read your p...

Yes but it needs the social model to fix it rather than the medical model. Well that’s a personal thing some people may desire future biological treatments that make their disability go away as some have worse symptoms. Someone on here once used the word Auti verse to describe those on the spectrum...

Its a spectrum so some are disabled some are not. Just because your doing fine doesnt mean others are too and vice versa I prefer the old fashioned un PC word of handicap. A handicap means a disadvantage in something, which is best used to describe someone on the milder end of aspergers who may have...

It is a very sad situation. I wonder how old the daughter is? It doesn’t say but I suspect she’s old and grown up enough to be uncontrollable. It seems to be a sad common occurrence with severe autism. The suffer reaches an age where their parent/ parents just cannot look after them anymore because...

A harrowing account of a typical day in the life of a family caring for their severely autistic daughter. I don’t think Neurodiversity has many answers for them & I doubt any of them including the daughter would find an “autistic identity” useful. Life With My Autistic Daughter Has Left Me Bruis...

The way it is often used is to say you are white, you are privileged, your opinion is worthless. That might not have been the original intent of the concept when it was conceived but that is how it has been effectively used. And yes guilt tripping is a part of the weaponization of the concept. Used...

Assuming he’s saying they are intelligent why would they be hiding from us?

They would probably be more advanced and more than able to defend themselves. Do we hide from the ants?

To me, the eufemism treadmill seems to originate form mistaking causes with effects. Hate doesn't stem from use of offensive words. Use of offensive words stems from hate. Words can become offensive because of hate. Focusing on banning offensive words does exactly nothing to adress hate and prejudi...

The Trailer for Sia's "Music" Hurts Autistic Girls Like Me by Charlotte Gush for Teen Vogue This week, I tried to find representations of autistic women in film. They are few and far between, but some do exist. When Alan Rickman chastises Sigourney Weaver’s idiosyncratic autistic characte...
