I have had a bit of practice at singing, and once attended a group celebration with a folk singer who led us in some songs with related topics. Afterward, she told me I had a nice voice, and asked why I had not sung more. I had to explain that whenever I thought about the lyrics instead of the tune,... |

http://www.ted.com/talks/misha_glenny_hire_the_hackers.html A short history of internet security and control, some examples of the power of hackers, and much praise for their talents, which are often a product of asperger's. The thesis is that the U.S. is creating an adversarial relationship with th... |

I'm an old aspie, who only got a diagnosis a few years ago. All my life, and my mother's, we avoided doctors because we could only have been misdiagnosed and mistreated. I am curious to hear from kids who have had the various new treatments, and if they feel helped or just roboticized. Generally, wh... |

I got out of the habit of visiting here over the winter, when I was busy helping to evaluate submissions for the GE Ecomagination Challenge. I did it for experience working in groups, while staying safely on-line. One result is that now when I read Dlbert, it seems about ten times less exaggerated. ... |

I wasted decades trying to see the logic in situations where there was none. Life evolved before logic, and for most people, it is just a rhetorical style, not a structure. For me, it was the first thing that helped me stay out of trouble, in combination with the easy-to-remember Golden Rule. When y... |

Lately, I've noticed a new target of prejudice - the "gingers." From the context, I'm guessing this refers to people with red hair. Anyone know from where in our culture this new attack originates? |

My ex called me passive-aggressive quite a bit, but she was assuming a lot. I can usually keep a conversation going, if necessary for politeness, but I don't find much middle ground between boring and scary. Too often, I meet people who just want to talk. I keep an egg timer handy in case I decide t... |

You can't please everybody all the time. Some people would not be satisfied if you spent all day cleaning the deck and doing other chores they set. Sometimes, you get to deal with reasonable people who try to work things out for everyone, and other times, you have to resist getting co-opted by peopl... |

There's always prejudice and discrimination. It comes from the need for tribal solidarity, but it is sloppy in expression. Reigning it in is a maintenance job in a larger society, and the programs are ad-hoc, so what is socially acceptable changes from time to time, and place to place. There are cou... |

I recently realized that all the worst times in my life have come from expecting other people to notice logical connections, and them not getting it. I finally realized, at 62, that life evolved before logic, and gets along just fine without it. Most of what appears rational is just rationalization,... |

One way to approach writing is with a list of points you want to cover. Then fill in the details, and arrange the parts to flow easily. |

Train travel is interesting, partly because there is no attempt at landscaping. The tracks reduce property values nearby, except for industry. I've had a few good train trips. One time, I spent 3 days finishing off chores like mending that I could do on the train. As we got close to a major destinat... |
