I know what you mean. But I wouldn’t have made it under those conditions. Maybe because I’m lazy? I knew this, so I chose the more secure, less lucrative route. It’s always good to know your strengths and weaknesses. And if somebody doesn’t respect me for that, it’s tough nuggies on them :) This is ...

I wonder if you could make extra money tuning pianos, like my great aunt Marguerite did in the early 20th century.

This is such a hard business. Luck is always in the equation.

There are many destitute people of great ability, but little luck.

Now I KNOW why it’s better to work for a steady salary! And be a member of a union. Maybe I would make less—but at least everything is above-board and regulated. I wouldn’t have the wherewithal to deal with this sort of crap. I’m lucky I got a steady civil service job pretty much out of high school....

I feel, at times, that I’m in quicksand. Metaphorically, of course.

I was a city employee.

The best advice is to seek to avoid making the same mistakes.

You’re not “fired” yet.

I don't think you've even had a "written warning."

What is your civil service status? Are you in a union?

If you’re a full-fledged civil servant, it’s very hard to fire you.

Just your luck----that you encounter this sort of thinking.

It doesn't mean this is the predominant thought-pattern of the US populace.

That's the way the news has been since there has been "news." People don't just report the "good stuff" most of the time; the "good stuff" doesn't sell papers, or TV ratings, or whatever "papers" are called on the Internet. I guess "papers" are calle...

Rival African tribes would (usually) capture people of other tribes, and "sell" them to the Europeans.

Or (related): the Europeans would pay the “rival African tribes” in some sort of currency for those “tribes” to capture their rivals for the Europeans.

Certainly never said you should reveal your exact location.....or even your approximate location.

I meant more along the lines of----any particular organization you encounter----certainly not "where you live."

I'm liberal in some respects, conservative in others.

I'm most akin to what is termed "Social Democracy," which is rather dominant in Europe, but not so much in the US.

A nihilistic viewpoint is understandable....but is not practicable within the present world environment.

It seems to me that most of the Royal Family are pretty "regular" people who happen to be exposed to a lot of scrutiny. They've all had advantages, certainly. But, in essence, most are people who would not be extraordinary were they not "Royals." Would Harry have had a somewhat d...
