I don't know what options you have in the UK. We homeschooled our children to avoid the problems one might expect with the industrial education complex. We found instilling our children with an enthusiasm for learning allowed them to continue learning on their own without the detrimental impact that...

Auditory hallucinations are usually symptomatic of mental illness. Visual hallucinations are usually symptomatic of something toxic in the blood stream. I experienced delirium from a very high fever as a child. The hallucinations seemed just as real as everything else in the room. I took a number of...

There is something called "selective mutism" that can be found in Aspergers. It is related to anxiety such as in school or with certain people that can inhibit speech. However, it sounds like your daughter may be not inclined to speak much at all. If her speech is not inhibited by anxiety,...

I am 70 years older and I would find it scary. The two main scary aspects would be movement and noise. If you insist on using a robot vacuum, you might locate the child in another room for the duration.

This is similar to learning to drive. Too much focus can "blind" a person to that on the periphery that needs to be tracked. There are exercises that can help such as using a timer to draw one's attention away from whatever is focused on to consider some other subject. This sort of exercis...

Sometimes people try to control their anxieties by controlling others. For parents who see how dangerous the world can be, this can sometimes result in attempting to control everything to prevent tragedy. For parents with excessive anxieties, this can result in an excessive desire to control. No one...

You might try something like Toastmasters, a social group that works to improve their public speaking skills.

Since it would be initially a group of strangers you might not have the anxiety you would have with people you know. At least they would be sympathetic to someone with difficulty in speaking.

Your inquiry of who often they wanted to see you was probably based on the assumption that they would either want to give you a report or that they would be interested in your help to get your son adjusted. It is the nature of agencies, departments, and organizations to be insular and see any extern...

Not all therapists are competent, discrete, or effective. Some even see their job as to make people fit into conventional slots as opposed to developing the skills to navigate live more skillfully.

The key to communication is to be understood. If you are talking with people completely unfamiliar with the subject, you might use either term since it will be incumbent on you to explain what it means. If you are talking with people who are more knowledgeable, you still might be able to use either ...

Having children is the natural result of having sex. To prevent this one either abstains from sex or uses mechanical, chemical, or surgical technology to prevent them. Many people avail themselves of the technology to prevent children (as can be seen in declining birth rates). Often this is based on...

When faced with conflicting demands for your attention, you can act like a traffic cop with a whistle. In the situation you described your mother asking you to look at her painting could be told that it will have to wait for the first task to be completed. Your stepfather's concern about the dislodg...

Speaking intelligently Many see intelligence in others as being just as offensive to them as someone being tall. (the feeling based society again) Non-conforming many people achieve a redu...
