From what I read, I was mistaken when I said I would pay through the nose if I broke my arm in the UK I would actually receive free healthcare in an "accident and emergency" department in the UK. I might have to wait a while, though. Actually, I should have known better. My wife's son is ...

Do you have to work for someone else? I experienced some of the same sort of restrictions in my career. I went freelance which suits me better. I mean, it has downsides but on balance it works better for me. At least all the work you put in is for yourself, you don't feel so exploited. I'm not in te...

Can I ask a question? A question that might sound snarky and insincere but actually, I'm really interested. Assuming I can, here goes. It might end up being a couple of questions. I've not been here that long, but in that time I've read a few of the threads you've started and your first post of many...

I once was out running in the woods and I stumbled into a traveller's camp where I was immediately surrounded by aggressive looking dogs. One of them bit me. I hold no grudges against the dog. It's always the owners fault.

I love dogs and in general they seem to like me.

I can certainly see how it would be a very restrictive way to work, if you're more of a free-thinker. But I can also see why a business would implement it as a working practice. I guess it comes down to whether as a business you feel you have the headroom to allow your developers to work in their ow...

Used to be a little indie cinema in Southampton called Harbour Lights. Saw quite a few movies there alone because it was always empty.

I've ghosted women before it was even called ghosting. I think I did it because I was young and inexperienced and unsure of what was expected of me. I was insecure, fearful. I wasn't trying to hurt anyone. But I understand it was hurtful. I don't think it's much of a stretch to imagine that people o...

Ok, I'm far from an expert in any of this and perhaps I haven't understood you, but isn't test-driven development a sort of natural response to the increasing complexity of software? I mean, any large piece of software has so many people working on it that there has to be some sort of standardisatio...

Regularly: Most people do things regularly. Hanging around a bar/pub: Lots of people do that, not weird Once a week: Lots of people go to bars/pubs more regularly than that. 2-3 hours: Seems about right On your own: Ahhh, yes. I see. A lot of people seem to think anybody doing anything 'on their own...

I didn't want babies. I'm deeply pessimistic about the state of our species and our ability to manage the climate crisis that is upon us. I did not want to bring a child into a world where I suspect she will have to see wars over basic resources and societal collapse. I believe this civilisation has...

I think it's a 'know thyself' question to some extent. Can you handle being second priority to the children he had with another a women. Because if he's a good father, I'm afraid you will be. And if you're not second priority, what does that say about him. Are you okay with that ? I guess if you're ...

They're all oversimplifications of something that is intensely complex. It's a very human response to try to impose order on chaos, but the variables involved in two people finding each other attractive are too many to be reduced to a set of rules. Whether you take the red or blue 'pill', it will be...

What all those people said^^. Also these things: When I had a kid I got an overwhelming sense of vulnerability. It was kind of like...you know in a computer game when a boss appears and he's got a hole in his chest and you can see his heart and you immediately know that's where you've got to hit him...

Perform an intriguing dance wearing a funny hat. The cat will lose it's balance trying to follow your gyrations and fall into your bucket.
