Terrible news. I wonder if it was a client who decided to do this. This is place that helps people with Autism, and so many shootings have been done by people on spectrum.

I'm only trying to request stuff if they're legally obligated to give it. I'm not trying to beg for special privileges that aren't covered by ADA law. So called accommodations covered by the ADA are special privileges. Extra time, a separate room to take test, and whatnot are all special privileges.

Colleges in the US are obligated to give accommodations to students with various disabilities/disorders. Is ASD not one of those?

Are they legally required to provide you with special treatment yes, but it isn't good to demand such treatment.

No one is obligated to give you anything. Be greatful for whatever special treatment you get.

Deciding whether or not to take the GRE with extended time was a major decision for me. I seldom finish standardized tests unless I have extra time (even then, I often am the last "special" person with a test in my hand), but someone who worked at my undergraduate institution dissuaded me...

I have also seen studies that extreme low functioning autism is nearly all genetics, while more high functioning autism, is likely more environmental.

Actually more and most experts are agreeing that both environmental and genetic factors, play about an equal role. The truth is their are likely hundreds of different factors that cause autism. That it isn't a single thing, but a group of conditions that have similar traits.

So sad. Such senseless killings. He deserves the worst.

Do we know yet if he was on the spectrum? The way people describe him, he seems to really fit the profile. If he was, it doesn't surprise me.

IMHO you should limit any special treatment for your son, let him rise or fall on his own. If he fails then he fails. Better to fail without special treatment a false success with special treatment.

To me this is like congratulating someone for being diagnosed with down syndrome.

Another issue with the genetics is that all of the genes that are known to significantly increase ones risk of autism also cause other profound issues. Genes such as fragile X, Retts, and RASoPathies. They are all also extremely rare, and 99% of people on the spectrum don't have them. Other genes ha...

We know this to be false as we have identified some environmental factors that are known to cause autism, which are independent of genetics. That isn't to say there aren't genetic causes of autism, because we also know some genetic causes. Autism is likely a group of conditions, causes by many many...

Actually a lot of the resent research is showing the opposite with environment perhaps playing the biggest role of all. Environment being conditions that occur during pregnancy. I don't know that I agree with that. What are the chances that the environment in which my biological mother carried / ga...

As with most psychological conditions, genetics are a pre-requisite for the condition and the environment determines how much the condition appears in the phenotype. Specialized care, education, treatment, positive social interaction and proper supplementation may decrease the severity of the condi...

I would say that the research finds both genetic and epigenetic causation for autism. In conjunction, at times, with the environment. It could be that one might be born with a "predisposition" towards autism--and might, in the "right" environment, develop it. My ASD is idiopathi...

Are you sure college is right for Jeremy. If is too low functioning to manage without outside help, then perhaps college isn't for him.
