FYI: a disability does not have to affect academic performance in order to qualify for an IEP. It has to affect a child's "educational experience," which includes soft skills like socialization, executive functioning, communication, motor skills, etc. I highly recommend finding an advocate...

This is probably not going to be popular, but you know what. if they cannot keep this girl away, I would ask that your daughter's request to be elsewhere for recess be honored. She is not geting anything positive from it and if the other girl won't be restrained, that may be the only solution. I kn...

Maybe approach things in a cognitive manner? Adapt some of these? http://benziesangmassocialstoriesforautism.blogspot.com/2013/05/when-i-see-my-friend-cry.html http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Teaching-resources/Teacher-briefings/Emotional-support http://completecoach.pro/2012/08/14/why-we-cry-...

My son is terrified of crying people for two reasons: one, he has zero idea what to do. (Usually he winds up doing the right thing, but that doesn't mean he isn't having a panic attack in the interim.) Two, he actually feels the pain other people feel when they are crying. We haven't worked this out...

Just came across this guide, which I think is excellent - and also in YouTube format, which can make it easier to digest for a visual kid: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCelB-F ... 3dakpRPMyg

Momsparky, you sound strong enough to not give up.....I think you'll be successful but I find it really hard pushing back against well meaning experts who think they are right, and the effort of finding ways to communicate, as well as being accustomed to being pushed to the side as a spectrumite wh...

I never learned to do anything meaningful except homework assignments, and, despite graduating highschool with honors, I dropped out of three post secondary institutions, because I did not have the maturity of the life skills to handle it on my own. It's interesting that you say that: there's a way...

I hope they follow the IEP. It is exhausting having to always be vigilant. You bet - and I'm going to go farther, because I would bet that same issue has a lot to do with the fact that 70% of SPED kids are performing below grade level at our high school. It IS frustrating and exhausting, but I hope...

So, the punchline to this entire thread is this: I FINALLY got a copy of his IEP (obviously, a whole different problem,) and on the second page: "Momsparky stated that DS will need prompts to use his planner, clean out his backpack, and hand in completed work. It is most effective to email with...

Phew! OK, those sound like my exact concerns. At our IEP review, I'm going to find out if they will make accommodations to AVID to make it possible to work for my son.

...or on a homework page in an AVID book, or a school planner, there are some large issues with getting this information down. Actually, AVID was an option offered to us and I turned it down because it was presented as being very rigid, and I was worried that DS would not be capable of using a syst...

And BTW - teaching your child how to check each class seems to be a school function to me.

This is what I'm talking about. I wouldn't mind picking up the slack if there was any effort made in this direction, as is specified in his IEP.

The material that is on the website, she can check; but if there are teachers who either don't use it, or worse are inconsistent , she won't know if everything is on there or not. This means that effectively she is going to have to email those teachers with daily reminders to send her the homework ...

My son is a freshman in high school. He did not get an IEP until 5th grade, and got no support for executive functioning To be clear: we do expect that our role is to ask if my son has homework, and to make sure that he does it. The school is expecting us to go to each teacher's website each day, fi...

Reality check: what should a parent's role be in helping their SPED student's executive functioning deficits be where homework is concerned? I just had a long conversation with the SPED department and my son's caseworker: he has been missing approximately 3 assignments per week, and has not been get...
