That was an epic rant! I hear you, and despise hypocrisy as well. You have to wonder what motivates someone to write an entire book on not letting autistics ruin your dinner party. Sounds a bit control freakish to me.

I have this problem too, always confused whether someone meant something in a 'nice' way, or if it was a veiled put-down. (Probably because it's my family's way, to be passive-aggressive like that.) When in doubt, I strive to accept that either scenario could be true. If they meant it nicely, fantas...

Words like idiot, stupid, retarded, imbecile, etc have all at one time been objective medical term used to describe a certain set of symptoms. People invariably then adopt the word as an insult, and then the word changes to reduce stigma. People then adopt the new word as an insult, and the cycle c...

I've been reading more about this, and I seem to be split 50/50 between ASD and schizoid traits. (And apparently you can be considered to have both, even though the DSM rules it out.) I find it helps me to cope better, to understand the nuances of my diagnosis, and that I have strong Schizoid & ...

I struggle with depression too, especially in the winter months. As for coping when there's no hope of your condition getting better... I've been learning about existentialist psychology (which I would warn can be dangerous and make you more depressed) - but this quote has helped me: "Everythin...

I haven't been following what's going on, but this makes me sad and concerned. I've always enjoyed your posts in the past. Please stick around.

Sorry you're feeling so low lately. I know the feeling all too well, and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I'm grateful that I had enough sense to not have kids. I come from four generations of family dysfunction, and I'm proud of myself for breaking the cycle.

When I was younger I blamed myself for failing to fit in. Somewhere along the line that just turned to dull acceptance, and keeping mostly to myself. The autism diagnosis brought on anger, in a surprising way - when people dismissed it as a 'trend', just making excuses for failing to conform. It too...

Thanks for the perspectives - maybe I'm not so different after all, in essentially keeping my thoughts and feelings to myself, and doing my best to follow proper social etiquette. I think a major part of my problem is simply not being able to think quickly enough, in social settings. To process what...

That's helpful, thanks. I know that I have trauma issues that cause an additional layer of identity confusion, so I'm really curious to hear what is typical for ASD. For me, I feel that my physical body is a puppet, and I can try to make the puppet try to blend in socially - but not very well, not f...

I'm curious about other people's experiences with social masking, and perception of Self. Do you relate to the notion of being a 'chameleon', and trying to blend in as best you can? Do you have a sense of your 'true self' vs. 'false self' (a role that you play to satisfy other people's expectations?...

From what my therapists have said, it sounds like it's a tough call for them as well. (In fact in my last session, my therapist said she's coming to suspect Schizoid/Schizotypal rather than ASD after all... Why, I'm not exactly certain?) The diagnostic labels have gone through so many changes over t...

That's a good question. There's so much overlap in all of this (and ASD technically rules out Schizoid and Schizotypal - though they are considered to be on the Schizophrenia spectrum... It's confusing!) And I agree it's hard to know where to draw the line between a 'spiritual experience' and 'magic...
