Not really relevant to taking things literally but I just wished someone a happy birthday by saying "Many happy returns of the day" and although I know it's relevant for a birthday I have no idea wtf it means  I always assumed it expressed a wish that they wouldn't be dying for a whi...

It means they were not going to give you lunch if you are negative in your account. So let's say you ran out of lunch money they have in their computer system. You punch in your lunch ID number and your lunch account shows up and it says -$5.45. You can't have your lunch because you owe them money ...

Now I am confused about these idioms, can you explain what they actually mean? I'm not the person who posted this and I'm no native speaker, but I would think the confusion arose because the OP thought he had to bring a dog with him even though he didn't have one and that he had to show his passpor...

I remember being struck by a notice in the London underground saying "Dogs must be carried on the escalator," and then by contrast at immigration a notice saying "Passports must be shown at the immigration desk." Language, and unspoken conventions, can be tricky sometimes! Anothe...

Do you think it is possible to be as functional as possible if you are not given help and support for your issues/problems? I guess to varying degrees we learn, subconsciously or otherwise, compensatory mechanisms, but I am not sure that is always enough . I think it depends to a large extent on fa...

I have similar problems. It doesn't help that I have aphantasia too (no mental imagery).

So we all know that those with Autism/Aspergers send to have trouble realizing when someone is joking, which definitely is the case with me. But what seems to me to be even more common with me is that I do, in fact, know that someone is joking, but because I respond to it in the wrong way, people t...

The constant spamming has made me lose interest here and it's the same stuff anyway I have already posted. I have been busy anyway with life. It was indeed getting very bad, but it seems that Alex has now made some changes that really are blocking the spam rather effectively. I would like to convey...

Thank you very much for doing this! I think it will be very much appreciated by many people on WP.

- if we completely banned threads from new users then that would shut them out (and potentially cause the spammers to go back to spamming existing topics, which is much harder to deal with), and limiting them to one a day wouldn't stop them because they create new accounts very easily. ... Some of ...

I cannot imagine how administrators of this forum could decide that the best policy against the spammers is to do...absolutely nothing. And yet that appears to have been their decision, for months or years now. [ Devil's advocate ] How do you know that is the admin's policy , appearances can be dec...

I often struggle to have a conversation with someone while the TV or Radio is on as I unable to concentrate while there is background noise , it's almost as if my mind tries to do both - listen to the person and the TV at I hate it if there is a TV on when people are expected to talk with each othe...

Surely it must be counterproductive for a spammer to create problems like this as common sense would suggest new measures would be used to stop you. I think the problem with this forum is that it is not counterproductive for the spammers to continue. It seems that no countermeasures are ever used t...

I had no idea spam was an issue here. I'm not a member of any other forum but it does seem ridiculous that a new member can post so many new threads at once. I think one should be the limit. If the problem persists, I'll have to close my account. :( I really don't want to do that but if it's one th...

One of the flaws I'd like to point out (and the reasons those on the spectrum can do pretty well) is that this is a multiple choice quiz. In real life, you don't get four options to pick from when trying to read someone's emotions. I found that sometimes I had no idea what emotion the set of eyes w...
