I heard a "worst day of my life story." A boy about ten, on his birthday, got the news that his school was burning down. He got dressed for winter and went to wait for a ride from his Uncle to see it. Then, there was a train wreck in town and the Uncle forgot his first errand and went to h... |

I'd rather resist current Nazis than worry about cancelling old ones. I'm just glad that we have had a fairly well-known name, and think it is absurd to try to re-train everybody. I also don't care much about the DSM. It is more like a chronicle of fashion than hard fact. An accurate diagnosis for m... |

Your mom could use a lot of counselling, or at least some "passenger instructions" from your driving instructor. I can't even remember which parent taught me to drive. I was mostly self-taught off-road and encouraged to stop needing a chauffeur ASAP, so the instruction period was brief, bu... |

For over a century, until about 1905, improving steam engines and trains was the closest thing to a job at NASA they had. The Negro staff in the Pullman cars were not home much, but they were some of the best-paid men in the ghetto. |

There was a Swede, I think, who was charged for riding on the frame under a passenger car. Then, a week later, he got another bill, as the conductor had remembered that he'd been riding a first-class car. If you want to hop a freight, the Cadillac is the Jumbo Bulk Loader - a hopper car with bulging... |

Brits make great train music without singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wX9muArmeFg Recorded live at the BBC. Clapton steals the show with his harmonica, but Baker is awfully busy with his brushes to set the mood. I had a probably aspie friend who was a busking one-man-band and got his train i... |

Trains a bit closer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1KkXDZ2kCk
My first year in Winnipeg, I'd gotten used to the grey slush all over by springtime. Then I went to meet a friend at the train, and was dazzled by the pure white snow on the undercarriage. |

For further reading on the history and development of technology, I highly recommend the books of J.E. Gordon. He is a superb writer, and was very involved in the research. |

We assume certain technologies arrived atcertain dates, and while in general it maybe correct and true, there are often these exceptions found which later which prove us wrong! The mix gets extreme on the frontiers, where someone may be living with mostly stone-age technology, but also hires an air... |

Well didnt they go through a phase of making railroad tracks out of wood? With only an iron strip across the top where the wheels hit? Sherman's army marching through Georgia would tear up the railroads, and stick the strips into fire, bend them, and hang them from trees. The resulting tree decorat... |

Early locomotives were limited by the weight that the cast iron rails could take. If they weighed enough to get the traction needed to pull several cars, they broke the tracks regularly. Some were built with gear teeth wheels and racks added to the track. Steam engines began as mine pumps, and so th... |

But the speed of travel was increased considerably by railways. That was gradual. The first steam locomotives had to share the track with horse-drawn wagons. There were people wondering if it was possible to breathe if they got to 30 MPH, (50 kph) despite horses and winds being faster. The standard... |

Can you IMAGINE what a boon railways were back in the 1830s? Before this, one could only ride horses, take a stagecoach, or go very slowly down a river in a boat. Stagecoaches were supposed to be luxurious----but they were actually quite uncomfortable---especially if the horses bucked or whatever. ... |

So you have to keep in mind that being an expert or mastering something is a process. It starts with a simple interest that you end up falling in love with. Once you find that, it will happen on its own. You don't have to force it. I have a friend with a very strong interest in a field, but no apti... |

In North America, the rule is that if a Canadian RR car is sent to the US, the companies there can use the empty car as long as it winds up closer to the border. During WW II, they sometimes crossed the continent multiple times, and returned worn out. I also heard about a batch of side frames, which... |
