I can make a good effort to make friends, but only at a superficial level. More passing acquaintances. That's because I've learnt to ask new people about themselves, but my limited rapport only extends to an initial chat. I think I struggle to make meaningful friendships because I find time spent d...

IMO, one of the most important areas of compatibility or incompatibility between any two people is what they believe about misunderstandings. What do you believe?

Why raping Palestinians is legitimate Israeli military practice [...] The European Union followed suit and claimed to be "gravely concerned". But this is hardly a new development in the cruelty of the Israeli colonial-settler regime. The Israeli army has been systematically using physical...

WP is not going away.

Agreed, I appreciate the simplicity and "old school" design.

(I just wish a few oft-mentioned bugs would get fixed.)

Political statements belong in PPR. Political statements outside PPR should be against forum rules. Putting political statements in a signature puts political statements in areas of the forum where politics don't belong. If I were running a forum, this would be one of my rules. Ideally, a forum wou...

Webdev and Software Dev sometimes get close and even overlap. Web Pages tend to want things like CSS and JS. The complexity can grow fast. Writing code and need display and input and output. They can sometimes overlap with full stack development. Yes, if you're doing anything that can't be handled ...

I'm sorry to hear about your problems with neighbors and your dog. I wonder about the following: We cannot have a fence. The HOA will not allow it. Why not? Is this a common HOA rule? If so, what on Earth is the reason for such a rule??? If HOAs don't ALL forbid fences in your area, or if there exis...

Thanks for explaining this. I guess there isn't much further to say here, but I hope you understand why I didn't want to ask you the needed clarifying questions in the original thread.

to put things in an accurate perspective, the object was 400m wide so it wasn't the size of a basketball. Another object tracked by NASA from outside the solar system that crashed in earth (and is currently being investigated by Loeb) was actually only 500kg. Significantly smaller < Oumuamua https:...

^^^I've never enjoyed 'ambush' comedy. I just don't get what's funny about filming someone react to a situation that they think is real in a normal way and then....haha! it isn't real! Beats me. But it seems enduringly popular so what do I know. Indeed it is. Long before the advent of social media,...

Huh??? How is the size not relevant? Not even the best telescopes are infinitely magnifying, so of course there is such a thing as too small or too faint to be seen, or to be seen well enough for a given purpose.

2. it zoomed off after swooping by the sun, the object sped up faster than could be explained by our star’s waning gravitational grip alone (this was confirmed by NASA). Comets appear to do this also, due to loss of matter caused by outgassing (evaporation of material that was previously frozen but...

So I don't see how ʻOumuamua can be taken as evidence of much of anything at all, much less evidence of extraterrestrial technology. According to the rules of the scientific method, if known paradigms do not satisfactorily explain a phenomena, you can draw on other explanations and seek evidence to...

His interest in evidence for extra-terrestrial life began with Oumuamua https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CA%BBOumuamua Looked at this just now. Looks like ʻOumuamua was too small to have been seen well enough, by the telescopes that looked at it, for anyone to draw any definitive conclusions about it...

I see the biggest dangers coming from the potential military uses of AI. Unfortunately there's probably no good way to regulate that, because its manifestations won't be nearly as obvious as, say, a nuclear explosion, so there would be no good way to monitor compliance with any treaties intended to ...
