It's been 5 years since I posted on this thread! I still feel the label " high functioning" is a little cringeworthy reflecting some type of hierarchical judgment from an NT perspective Why not call it functional autism simply saying the person is able to function in mainstram society? Wh...

What I am not getting is why psychological experiences, for example, should not be treated with chemicals that fix the problem. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be...I also see no reason why they should be. A person could ask, "Why should psychological experiences be treated with chem...

Well, since psych meds aren't actually substances found naturally in any person's body nor are they found naturally in anything humans eat, I agree with ToughDiamond that the cause of mental illness is not a deficiency of psych meds -- although mental illness may be caused by a deficiency or excess...

... The primary problem is not the lack of psych meds in a person's body, and I hope people would normally look for better solutions and only use such medications as a last resort. ... Why is this not the primary problem? I kinda think it might be. I will be on medication for the rest of my life. T...

I get that too sometimes because I might explain something and I can't tell if they understood or if they just ignored me. It gets frustrating so I try to keep my distance from the people that do that, if I can. All sorts of people do the non-response thing with me and my best guess is that they ju...

This is what I am curious about, animalcrackers, where is the boundary between self and chemistry? I don't know, really, since it depends on who you ask....."self" is a very subjective thing. There are different ways I can look at it, personally, but I always come back to the same thought...

That's his business, of course, but I couldn't help but wonder at his weighing of the pros and cons. Is it truly better to have to move because of a ridiculous phobia than it is to take medication to deal with it. To my mind he was avoiding the problem by ignoring a good solution. So, I left him to...

If this is not the case, maybe you should just say directly "no, im not worried, Im just asking" so the person can feel a bit "shamed" of thinking I do that sometimes. Not to shame people, but because I want to be understood. That sounds like it might be a good idea. Does it wor...

I think the experience of being overloaded is the same for autistic people as it is for NTs. I think that we just get overloaded by different things than NTs do, there are probably a greater number of things that we will run into on a daily basis that stress us in a big way (versus a little way or n...

Something else that happens with me is if I make some kind of mistake and then mention it to someone they feel like they need to reassure me, but when other people talk about the mistakes that they make people usually laugh about it. Just today I was washing my hands in the break room at work and w...

Sometimes people would tell me that I just need to be more confident when I really don't know what I'm doing. So frustrating :x . I have gotten that, too. It's maddening. I think most people get mad when you question them about things like that because for some reason they think that you are trying...
