I never learned to drive. Here in California, that's considered unusual. I think people are sold on the "freedom" of having their own car, but considering the expense and the fact that it's work to drive, I wonder if they might be sold on the "freedom" of a more efficient public ...

it's a bit exaggerated, but not wrong. Abstract expressionism (Jackson Pollock) was pushed by American propaganda and used as an example how American art was innovative - the Russians at that point had abandoned abstraction for Socialist Realism and Europe was too devastated/intellectuals had fled ...

I think OP is referencing "levitated mass", by Michael Heizer... I just Googled what it looks like. Even if the rock itself is not sculpted, its placement and the pathway beneath it involve design. ...which is occasionally featured in conservative youtube videos about how modern art is de...

In my early experiences with posting my art online, I was in some art communities where technical accuracy was the considered the only thing that mattered. I got some purely technical critiques and asked if the person could also comment on the content, the characters and ideas, etc. They said no, th...

...In my view, his line of thinking is identical to religious thinking: an authority says so, therefore it's true. It's not your place to question it. After that, I couldn't take his atheist videos seriously anymore. Everybody talks rubbish from time to time. I can see how that instance of it would...

You can thank mankind itself for bringing down the punishment of death via the original sin. Read Genesis, the first book in the Bible. God originally created man to be happy with Him forever, but because Adam and Eve listened to Satan and disobeyed God, they screwed things up for the rest of us......

The comedian Patton Oswalt has a routine that touches on this idea called "Sky Cake." It's funny, but also insightful, I think. The abridged version: early humanity couldn't get any further along than having a big guy with a club wreaking havoc on everyone, until one day somebody came up ...

There's no contradiction in saying that a pandemic was inevitable but that people's actions or inactions made it worse than it had to be. I agree, however, I don't usually see people saying things like that. Usually it's more like "It's a hoax by the other side" or "If it wasn't for ...

Gee, reading this thread makes me think that I have got to be the laziest evil caucasian on the planet. I haven't got my arse off the couch long enough to oppress, subjugate, exploit, or victimize anyone of any color. Man, my ancestors must be so ashamed of me. For a while now, I've been thinking t...

Assuming opinions, including ones that haven't been expressed yet, are probably invalid based solely on race.

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to see that other people remember this. The symposium was basically about having a First Aid kit and non-perishable food supplies, etc., in case a pandemic broke out. Mentioning it was inevitable may have been to get us to take those precautions even if the bird fl...

I believe systemic racism against black people is sadly still a thing in America. I also believe that partisan politics is extremely opportunistic and both parties will try to spin things to their advantage no matter what happens. An ex-facebook friend posted an article about how voting third-party ...

I used to be a freelance theater critic for a local paper. At one point, I wrote a few news articles in an attempt to get on staff. One of my assignments was to cover a symposium on the bird flu hosted by local government officials. At the event, we were told that while nobody knew what was going to...
