https://publications.aap.org/pediatrics/article/142/3/e20180134/38659/Prevalence-of-Autism-Spectrum-Disorder-in-Preterm I was quite premature (about 3 months, due early October born late June), had to spend 3 months in the NICU. I have read that the risk of autism goes up for preemies, not to say ev...

I wonder might any of you please have suggestions how to make submitting job applications and interviews easier for people on the spectrum and other neurodiverse people (e.g. with ADHD, dyslexia, etc.)? I've volunteered at my workplace to help advise the HR department on these things, to help impro...

STEM abilities are certainly helpful if we are to have any hope at all of getting a decent-paying job, however. Most of the few relatively decent-paying jobs that don't require STEM abilities do require well-above-average social abilities, after all. And the latter are, by the very definition of &q...

Thanks for the replies, so it is a misconception. That is a relief because I sure don't feel like superwoman or anything. I guess my special abilities are being awkward and hating sudden loud noises.

I heard my two coworkers talking, and one was saying how her autistic nephew who is 3 could type a command into the phone for their electronics to work because he mimics everything. My other coworker said to her that she knew someone with autism who could memorize everyone's name in a large office b...

Yes getting up early (before 9am) is usually miserable. I am a night owl, tend to do better with evening shifts rather than morning or typical day ones. Hoping my next job can be an evening shift job. Early mornings are like torment, and I feel messed up the whole rest of the day. Same, I would fin...

Mine is just weird. It fluctuates. Sometimes I can't get up because of some jetlag like feeling that my insides -- my heart more so -- is working harder than usual. A sign of either me consuming enough caffeine, consuming melatonin (doesn't work well with me), no restful sleep at all and just layin...

Yeah feel like I live in a haze or a daze a lot anymore. Like trying to think through molasses or mud, not really connecting with anything and too tired/wore out to try.

That's one of the hardest parts, I think. I never had any interest in a career or profession. I have no issue with being responsible for myself, I just don't think the way NTs do. I totally get that. Out of high school, I had no desire to go to college, and no career ambitions. I'm fascinated by pe...

Yeah my dad has managed to make a successful life for himself (good job, had kids).

auntblabby, sounds like it is very possible for your dad. Substance use is a way to try to cope.

Yes school is not the greatest with autism, work can be tough too depending on the job.

^^^so did you succeed at all that? For me? I'm working at it still. Living situation is better than it was (not so much random fireworks going off here, much better for me mentally!). Still working on the job situation, hope to improve that, that is a hard one. Still learning to handle life stuff m...

My (ASD) mom "suppressed" her sensitivities - it then showed up as medical incidents or physical or emotional withdrawal. I do think many sensitivities mellow with age. It's possible if they were minor they could "go away". More likely it has to do with stress. My mom claims she...

I found this out when I figured out I might have autism and husband talked to him (Dad) about it then I finally talked to him about it. Husband initially mediated a phone call because he can explain and talk about things better and also might be taken more seriously for him to talk about it rather t...

Yeah I guess maybe I do have ambition in some sense, like many of you do to just live ok and live peaceful and more simple. I too do not desire the typical ambitions that most have (climbing the corporate ladder, huge house, things like that). I just want to have some good people around me and not b...
