Autism Speaks is very well funded and passes money out everywhere to lots of organizations, who, in turn, say nice things about them. I don't know how they got so powerful so fast, maybe by scaring everyone. What is out there to push back? I talked politely to an Autism Speaks researcher, explaining...

People used to think that English was not my son's native language because he had a strong accent but his accent came from sounding out words in books and saying them rather than picking up words from hearing them.

I hope life gets better and you stick around and become a wise elder who knows what to say to others who are going through what you went through. Sorry you went through what you did.

I've learned through the years that there are no magic bullets where you finally find the right answer and everything falls into place. It's all about baby steps but holding your ground as you inch forward. Then eventually those baby steps accumulate and you find a few times where things fly into pl...

They don't actually give price breaks for having the card. They screw people for not having their POS cards. I don't shop at manipulative POS stores that have cards. I avoid those stores, too. I thought it was a marketing gimmick that they'd give up on eventually but more stores picked up on it. I ...

I teased them once, saying the they're trying to put together profiles on people to spy on them, like if a woman buys a lot of chocolate once a month, they're going know when she's PMSing.

I hate those cards. When I go to Alberson's or Safeway I have to pay more unless I brought their card or give the clerk my phone number. It always makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't like adding more hoops to shopping. It's a stupid gimmicky waste of time for everybody. Do people really feel good t...

The reduction in Down Syndrome had no societal ramifications, a reduction in autism does. Despite what the cure people think, MOST folks with autism are the high functioning variety. Several major advancements in technology and science alone have been made by people on the spectrum. One has to pres...

What about the speculation that Autism Speaks is funding attempts to develop a prenatal test for autism to allow abortion of autistic fetuses? I've been reading about that. It's not everyone who feels that way but there are some pretty hateful blogs saying Down Syndrome has been reduced by abortion...

Maybe they're getting the message a little but now I'm thinking Autism Speaks is a mixed bag of bad and good. They still seem to want to make money by scaring everyone into thinking a very scary autism monster is hiding under everyone's bed and nobody is safe. However, when I'm browsing the web look...

I don't know if this can help but maybe it could help you explore why Eva makes her choices. I was a fat kid. I blamed all my weirdness on the fact that I was fat. I lost weight and actually looked pretty but I wasn't normal because I was still me but I still blamed my weirdness on the fact that I s...

OregonBecky, I wish every thread on WP was like this. I wish real life was like this. I wish I had been able to have conversations like this when I was trying to make tough decisions...this really makes me feel like people can work together to reach common societal goals...for the good of individua...

He reminded me that one of the reasons he loves school is because he gets to help the other students. He has trouble socializing and doing normal chit chat so when he starts a class, he busts his butt to learn everything so he can help other people. The teachers say he's very helpful and they like ...

What a terrific suggestion! Many universities offer online courses which may be a good fit for him (my department offers several, but for select courses only, mostly at the introductory level). There are possible pitfalls, however. Lacking the direct interaction with the teacher in the classroom, s...

Have you looked into the possibility of online classes? (I took classes at two regular colleges and two community colleges, never an online class, so this is just based on what others have told me:) that they are for the very motivated self-starter, and are fast-paced. But I imagine someone with as...

Sometimes you have to just go for something and stretch your limits... Otherwise you won't know what you are capable of doing. At least, that's how I've gone through my life. Granted, I never went to community college. I jumped straight from high school into a large public university, 3000 miles aw...
