I've been using it since '01 or so.

I don't use it myself, but I've helped my mom figure out how to use it.

I used PayPal for years but not recently. I don't want to use it any more.

I hope you are talking about https://www.paypal.com/

There are some imitation Paypal sites I think, so it's important to type that exact address in (instead of relying on autocomplete) and make sure you see your browser's secure site symbol (usually a lock) in the address bar. Otherwise a fake website could get your personal information.

I use Paypal everywhere except Amazon(because it doesn't accept Paypal). Paypal issues a one-time use token to retailers so they never have any of your financial information. This way I don't care if these other retailers without large security departments get hacked or not, all I have to put my trust in is Paypal. Amazon is a massive company that can afford to take security seriously so I don't feel any concern with giving them my financial information.

Paypal is supposed to guarantee every purchase but that's a bunch of crap that I just ignore. Any fraudster can send you a fake item and Paypal will just force you to ship it back to them(usually back to China) which costs more than the value of the item and the seller can just claim that they never got it, so that whole purchase guarantee is bs marketing.

That said if there is ever a Canadian equivalent of Privacy.com where you can get one-time use virtual credit card numbers that you control when they expire and how much money is on them, I would use that over Paypal in an instant. Unfortunately, it is for Americans only.

I don’t get how PayPal works, can someone tell me? Why do they need your social security number?

Apparently, they can and do ask for your SS number. I have long used paypal and highly recommend them. You'd be amazed what you can sell on Ebay. PayPal is needed for small time buyers and sellers to use Ebay.

I suspect Paypal needs some details from you in order to accept payments due to US laws. I think you're not allowed to pay money to people without at least some details about where the money is going. Kind of like merchant accounts but paypal is often less strict than many of those.

I don't know how Paypal manages money behind the scenes - I suspect they are probably not much different from a bank, or they may have links with banks to transfer money around. However they've been around a long time and they're very successful so that suggests to me they are probably fairly trustworthy.

Don't rely too heavily on their money-back guarantees though. If you have a dispute with a seller, often it ends up too expensive to actually follow through, and Paypal won't necessarily make it easy to resolve the dispute. I still use Paypal sometimes though.

For the same reasons a bank needs your social security number, I would guess. Paypal isn't quite a bank, but it is a financial institution very similar to a bank.

I use Paypal for business purposes, as a means of getting paid. (My boyfriend and I are a team of programmers.)

Do you know if PayPal is a bad thing to use for people on SSI?

I only use it to make payments with my credit card. I don't store any funds on Paypal because accounts can get suspended out of nowhere.
