Sometimes a complete, cold shutdown makes all the difference too. ;) Glad it all worked out... if it happens again, there may be a hardware glitch and that $20 card will save you from buying a $250+ machine.

LIKE I SAID: Get a diagnostic USB port hardware test and if that isn't the problem then at least you've ruled that out. When that comes back negative or you find a download fix let us know.[/quote]

Do you know where I could find a good one?

Sorry about that! I didn't realize that you got your USB working again(LOL!) in the post before that. WTF was I thinking? *slaps head*

If there is a hardware malfunction with the USB ports they will not be detected by the Windows operating system and won't show up in the installed devices section of your control panel. But when you get an error saying "no device driver is installed" or "device driver did not install successfully" that means there is a conflict between the operating system and the device driver.

Ooooooh! Ok because whenever I connected something (hhd, stick, modem) it just said that the device had no drive installed.

Replace the hardware and have done with it.

Time to get your laptop to a repair shop and have them test your USB ports to determine if it indeed a hardware problem. Because honestly it sounds like it might be; but it could also be be a software bug in your device driver or OS.

The $20 USB card is way cheaper than a repair bill!

Start by doing a full shutdown/power down (not merely closing the lid.) Take out the gadgets while the unit is off and leave them out when you turn it back on. Wait until the machine is fully booted and try adding the gadgets again but only ONE at a time and wait until it's fully running before you add another.

I've checked and the hardware is as expensive as buying a new one :(
No worries though! Spoke to my friend today and we are building a new computer from scratch. :)
He has some stuff laying around so hopefully it wont be too expensive.
By the way the usbs are working again hahahahaha!
