The only way to be nearly sure to remove everything malicious is to wipe the disks and reinstall everything from scratch.

i couldn't agree more...even though Paypal told me it was totally unnecessary, and that whoever drained my bank account yesterday of *$5K* (you read that right) didn't do so via a virus -- they simply "guessed" my Paypal password.

when i asked how this could have happened, the rep said: '"do you ever use a public computer?" NO. "are there people in your household who have access to your computer?" NO. "do you have your passwords written down anywhere?" NO. "do you use the same password for any other site?" NO.

"oh, well, there's a myriad of possibilities as to how it could have happened -- but what's important now, is to prevent it from happening again: simply change your paypal password, your email password, and your bank password, you'll be all set."

WTF? -- and this was a DUDE, from the FRAUD department -- the guy is supposed to be SMART -- like smarter than ME, right? (and, no, unfortunately, i'm not an Aspie; i've got NLD -- therefore, there's not a chance in *hell* that i've got any tech smarts. :lmao:)

yet, apparently, i've got a whole LOTTA "Captain Obvious" abilities -- because after i did what he said, i suddenly thought: "wait a minute -- if this WAS due to a virus, it's still on my pc, and therefore, changing passwords won't do a damn thing."...

my Mcafee antivirus never detected anything beforehand though. i tried running a scan with it anyway -- nada. so, then i tried AVG -- nothing. then i tried SuperAntiSpyware -- nope. then i tried Malwarebytes -- negative. i was about to give up when i surfed and found something about microsoft security scanner -- i thought, "if those things couldn't catch it, there's no way this will...but i've got nothing to lose, so..."

and, lo and behold, it picked up the following, immediately:

trojan:Win32/Vundo

it also removed it. then i researched it IN-DEPTH (for hours), and found that removing it may not take out all of it, and therefore, my computer is still vulnerable, and the ONLY way to be sure is to wipe and reinstall...

so, get this: when i called my computer company today and told them all of this, the tech dude said "but that's not necessary -- i can fix it." :x

yeah, ok, NOT...send me the damn disks!
