I don't want ANYTHING to get through, not even a tracking cookie! I want Pentagon-level security.

Go ahead, say "get a Mac". I know where you live.

Get OpenBSD. :P

Seriously though, antivirus won't do much of anything to prevent tracking cookies. For that, use Firefox with NoScript and BetterPrivacy. Avoid downloading stuff from shady sources. No need to run an antivirus, but you could run Spybot S&D if you feel like being paranoid- it should clean out your tracking cookies, not that any of them should be able to get past BetterPrivacy.

Considering the thread is About the best anti virus, I have to recomend Avast.
If you want pentagon level security then...

Avast running with all set to high and daily virus scans
Comodo run to Custom policy mode and the defense + module running on Safe mode
Spybot with daily scans
MBAM with daily scans
SuperantiShitware Running with daily scans

Get a decent firewall. I haven't used an anti virus in ages for my PC until recently out of curiosity. None found apart from a few tracking cookies but they're quite harmless, easily removed.

well, if you want Pentagon-level security, you should look up 'Tempest' machines.

if you want CIA - level security, consider their method; an 'air gap'...;)

The safest way is wireless. If there are no wires, there is no real way to infect your PC... simple
The other alternative is to disconnect before you go online, or use another computer. That way, you computer will be kept clean

Boot your OS from CD-ROM and throw away all your infectable, unreliable hard drives.

Never use Windows online ... except in a Virtual Machine.

Download a Ubuntu live CD -- it'll have all the programs you'll need (openoffice, webbrowsing, etc) and when you reboot your system everything is wiped.

I don't understand how wireless is any different from an network cable.. you have said that as a joke (sometimes I am dense).

The only way to insure your PC never gets infected by a virus/spyware is to never turn it on.

But if you ever load software, open an email, surf the web, ect.. there is always a chance that something will get through. Depending on the type of activity the PC is used for.. the chance of getting an infection varies. Plus, if you are involved in questionable activity, there is always the chance of having your IP tracked.

I suppose his definition of wire-less is unplugging everything. However, even discounting laptops running on batteries, there's already wireless charger on the market and when combined with wifi, it's easy to connect to the net wirelessly.

Get Norton Antivirus & Norton Firewall.

If you want Pentagon level security, try z/OS. :)

My antivirus is expiring soon, the one I used so far was kapersky. Is it good? Or should I take another antivirus?

The best anti-Virus out there is simply to use another system that people don't really write virii for, like MacOS, or one of the other *NIX's.

That being said, I've heard good things about F-Secure.

A well configured hardware firewall is a good defence! As for anti-virus... hmm.. you're better off with Linux if you're paranoid about security as I am.

Security is usually inversely proportional to ease of use, are you sure you wanted to swallow it? I'm sorry but a simple anti-virus program will never give you Pentagon-level security. And tracking cookies aren't really security risk, you are losing unnecessary sleep if you worry too much about them.

If you are using Windows, a good measure is to use Sandboxie. Use your sandboxed browser to surf unknown sites and clear the sandbox regularly. Use the unsandboxed browser or better yet another totally different browser to surf trusted sites (like email, bank, etc.).

If you are paranoid, surf inside an emulator and revert the vm to a snapshot after each session.
