I have a PII 400Mhz, with 8meg SIS onbored graphics running Win98. I tried PowerDVD that came with the DVDROM and it just did not work. It said it could not find a TV out. Which is dum because my 8meg SIS onbored graphics does not have a TV out and I would think that PowerDVD would know that. So than I tried Realplayer and it played a DVD but the video playbak was jerkey. Than I read somthing about VLC player in Linux Format and than tried playing a DVD and it worked!! !! ! NO JERKEY PLAYPAK. Eveything worked. It played all commercial DVDs out of the box. No downloading codecs. It just did it. I plaeyd a region 4 DVD and a region 2 and it did not conplan. I rate VLC player 10/10.VLC is fantastic for old slow computers.
Yep, VLC is great. It plays everything. My sister's computer programmer boyfriend told me about it. It seems like all the best software is free, but it's stuff that only the geeks know about.

So is VLC some media player? What types of things can it play?
(PS: You're running a Win98? *memories of my old 166mhz win98 and its 28k modem flash* *barfs*
Just never try using a new computer while you're still using that, or within seconds you'll start to despise your 98)

It's simply the best player, plays all kinds of formats, you name it. It also plays DVDs, VCDs etc, everything! Is updated frequently, and it's freeware.

I remember running Windows 98 with an AMD 450 with 320MB (128MM PC100 x2 + 64MB PC100)
And a 32MB vRAM S3 Savage 3D graphics card. As said - memories
I tried VLC but when it comes to DVD's the quality is low. I bought the laptop off eBay and the seller done a fresh install of Windows XP Pro (key provided) and with a disc too (disc not expected)
I found that the Combine Community Codecs Pack to be much better. Or at least the player side of it.

You may also want to give "Media Player Classic - Home Cinema" a try. It can usually take better advantage of your display card. I'm just not sure how much difference it'll make on your hardware.
