Sometimes, when I dorm during the week, I use a web application called eBuddy for IMing people. This is because none of the instant messaging programs are approved to run on the school's computers.
Anyway, sometimes, I'll be chatting with a friend who speaks both Spanish and English, and advertisements will pop up on the sides of eBuddy that are in Spanish - one that sticks out in my mind was a Starburst ad in Spanish. My friend will often have his username in Spanish (for example, he'll have "jaja" instead of "haha"), but we will be chatting in English.

I was wondering why this happens when both of us are typing in English? Could it be that the web application is picking up on his username, and then delivering me ads in that languages? It's not that I mind it, I'm just curious, that's all.

I noticed that if you type an obscene word into thesaurus.com, it says that the word is "not found", but it also provides advertisments directly related to the obscene word.
