I am asking for any recommendations about what software might be best for video editing and composition for videos that will be submitted to YouTube. Does anyone have any suggestions? My system is, unfortunately, 64-bit Vista, so I can't use Mac software or Linux or whatever else exists out there.

I use Windows, and I've been with Corel (formerly Ulead) Videostudio for 3 years now. It's easy to use (once you get used to the quirks), and very versatile. Certainly didn't break my brain like Adobe Premiere. The latter appears to be made for rocket scientists.

The version X3 (latest) actually had an option for making files for optimal upload to Youtube. I tried it... of course, if you try to upload them thru Studio itself, it will fail, but the files it generates with that option are compact (MPEG-4, 3x less size than same quality MPEG-2 files) and crisp and look very nice on Youtube.

there are lots of options, virtualdub is free, obscenely fast and good at cutting/editing, but unfortunately doesn't support multi-tracks. Something more good at composing? Adobe premiere ($$$), or even the damn video editor included in windows. Pinnacle released something free not so long ago, user friendly.
