Okay I'm thinking about having my first real bill to pay monthly before I go to college next year for 2 years (Next Fall). And I'm thinking of getting High Speed internet so I can start playing online shooters again like I used to. (also need good multi-player online shooters for PC :)) Anyway I'm looking at comcast's services (only people near here that I know of that provide cable internet) and wondering which I should get? They have a few different kinds and I only want the internet package so if anybody has experience with them let me know. Also customer service and cancellation or etc. fees you know about would be good thx everybody :D

I have only have experense with Time Warner before I moved. Also with comcast be careful if you do and thing that deals like p2p downloads or updates that use torrent protocols. Do keep in mind of a possable contract I would go on there site and do some research some the plans and all that. Also make sure to check availablilty of service.

I use BT, but I see you're in the US so what I think of them isn't really relevant to you.

All I'll say is, if you have a Virgin ISP over there, don't use it unless you want to be cut off for piracy (yes, even if you didn't pirate anything).

DSL is what I have and isn't fast enough for my needs.

You said you were into gaming ("online shooters"), which requires ping speed. Even a dial-up connection could supply a reasonable ping. It has nothing to do with the bandwidth figure.

(Interestingly... see "Cheating" under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping_(video_gaming) - I'd never thought of a high ping ever being an advantage!)

I doubt Comcast will be any faster, if even as fast. And, be cautious about knowing exactly what is *really* being said whenever speed is mentioned. I actually know too little to say very much here, but I do know DSL on a land line will do at least as much and as well as anything else available here where I happen to live.

now of days Dial-up does not have want it takes for Games anymore I know because before i was on 3G I was on Dial-up and i could only sync up at 46.6Kbps. Now of days 99% of servers have high ping kickers. Also the phone companys don't care about Dial-up anymore so they don't maintain the phone switchs that good anymore.

Also
KingofKaboom to let you know DSL is Broadband. Dial-up and under is narrowband and ISDN and up is concider Broadband

I didn't realize the OP is from Mississippi, the phonelines in the south are notoriously bad, so dsl service may be poor quality, until BellSouth finishes their fiber optic upgrades, the current system is using long strings and tin cans

Ahh, makes sense

Low bandwidth & high latency isn't something you want in online games.. A poor 3G connection would probably beat dial-up :P

You miss my point. Low ping is essential for gaming. Bandwidth is largely irrelevant. A "poor" 3G connection - if by "poor" you mean one with unpredictable, sometimes huge, ping timings - is useless.

Exactly, low ping is essential -> dial up goes in the bin

I am lucky enough to live in an area we have Fios avaiable to us and it is great. I feel bad for ppl that do not have that option. Everyone that sees our service and how we are treated is jealous and has either signed up or called verizon to ask that the service be put in their area.
