The purpose seems to be to exchange information about the targets, so that people who want to nominate a target, or alter the sun profile according to target type, can nominate their choices for future image acquisition. It is amazing that missions can now respond to demand in this way.

They could still do a lot more ( http://lroc.sese.asu.edu/ ) to share the unprocessed data.
