Go Daddy Cancel Domain

Hey.
I bought a domain name in 2010.
From GO Daddy and now I do not need it I want to cancel it (as I signed Up for a 2 year and im only on my first year)
But when I went to:
My Account> Payments And Renewing Items> Renwals And Upgrades
Then I selected the following plans:

Mini Online File Folder (1 GB) (annual)

Certified Domain - 2 Year

.COM Domain Name Registration - 2 Years (recurring)

Protected Registration

Hosting - WordPress - Economy - 2 years (recurring)
Then i pressed cancel.

And then it led me on a page asking me for Identification.
It asked for my name my phone number and an image of my passport.
If I submit the passport image along with the requested info, will my domain pay cycle be canceled?

Something don't sound right. Why so much ID?

probably so someone cant just cancel your website just by having ur account login details.


there have been horror stories about leaving GoDaddy, however i use them as my hosting provider and not any major trouble. AOL is also my ISP, go figure...

I can't think why any website would require an image of your passport - especially as you already have an account with them.

You've bought that domain name for two years minimum and that can't be 'undone' now so the best bet, since GoDaddy looks a little suspicious, is to write to your bank and cancel any standing payment you have set up.

Argh bloody hell.
I knew buying off of that stupid company would be a bad idea.
Could I just contact them through email?

Worth a try, I guess - but going by your existing problems, probably not.

Remember though - you're in control of what gets paid or not, whatever the outcome from GoDaddy.

If you want to keep the domain then you could have 123-reg simply transfer it from GoDaddy, and they should be able to manage this without you having to get too involved]

I want to get rid of it.
But I might buy another domain in feture.
Whats Network Solutions like.
Did not Facebook get hosted with them?

Oh well, if you just want to get rid of it then stop paying and the registration to your name will quietly expire.
No idea about Network Solutions I'm afraid.

I use 123-reg to hold my domain name. It means I can point to the servers on another hosting company with more confidence. If the hosting company holds your domain and they go bankrupt or just become crap it can be a nightmare trying to transfer the domain elsewhere or cancel. At least doing if via 123 I was able to simply sign up with another hosting company and redirect to them in a matter of minutes without hassle. Then just a case of telling the original hosting company they are no longer wanted and cancel any recurring payments.

on the passport/ID proof :
think about it, say i shoulder-surfed you or hacked your emails - that way i waould have all the info i needed to log into GoDaddy and cancel your web hosting - costing you lost business if that's what yuor website was. however, as they ask for a photocopy of a passport, i have to prove im you before i would cancel it... just a thought.

OP already has an account with GoDaddy which allowed the domain to be registered - and that registration itself could have been a fraudulent act anyway so requiring ID beyond the basic account logon is unnecessary.
Posting an image of a passport proves nothing whatever (quite apart from the fact that the OP may not even have one), and I have never heard of something like this being required as a means of on-line identification.
In fact it's so unusual as to be immediately and highly suspicious.

I can send a form of identification (Like the nuclear codes ). But it would make me abit uneasy on my privacy bubble.
But... If it means getting rid of that curse of a site..
Then Its worth it.

I started it in 2010 (not knowing what I was going to do in the computing field) and then I started programming properly and im just sick of the burden of having the website.

Meh. Just make sure your payments are cancelled and it will die anyway. I did just that a while ago with a domain name I owned.
If you've set up a direct debit or standing order then a formal (posted) letter instructing your bank to immediately cease payments should be all that's required. You don't have to give a reason.
If it's done via PayPal then you can cancel it yourself through your PayPal account.

Burden? Nah. Abandon it if it looks like GoDaddy is going to be troublesome.

Well, ya gotta practice first. The ideas will come.

Hey Cornflake, just thought I would update you on some more stuff.
So, I should contact Paypal and say I want them to cancel any payments to Godaddy? Will I get any trouble from them do you think?
I have until March 2012 to do it.

Are you sure it's not that big a deal to cancel it directly at GoDaddy?
Apparently you just go to My Account | My Domains | check the domain name and select cancel, which sounds much the same as I'd do with mine.
You know you can just change to a different company and have the name transferred? It's your property, not GoDaddy's.
