And another question, how fast do you type? according to this site- http://www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php I type 56 words per minute.

Supposedly you can type much quicker on a dvorak keyboard. And I like that their is a programmers version that you can get (for free) certain symbols are in better spots.

edit: the dvorak keyboard is just made like that for english, there are different versions of it for french, spanish, etc.

You can also type much quicker on a qwerty keyboard ;)

I was tempted to learn this though, but it is frustrating going from 110+wpm down to sub 20's and being a noob all over again.

If one is doing a lot of typing it would make sense to minimize the effort or maximize the output per unit of time. Time is precious. A second wasted can never be recovered.

The calculation is this: will the time required to come up the speed on the D. keyboard be more than saved in subsequent typing?

1.Dvorak is available on microsoft or apple.
2. Go to wikipedia on the Dvorak keyboard, it says how you can find it on a third party program and that you can create your own keyboard format using it.

It was worth it to myself and to my husband. We've both been using Dvorak since 2003 and could not imagine going back to Qwerty!

My husband is a computer programmer and I like to write on the computer. The Dvorak layout just makes more sense logically speaking, IMO, and it's so nice to have the most commonly used letters in the English language as well as the vowels in the home row.

It took my husband maybe 2 weeks to get fast at the Dvorak and it took me about a month, but I don't type as often as he does. I never learned how to touch type with the Qwerty so that might be partly why I like the Dvorak so much :)

That is a temporary slowdown. Practice makes perfect.
