Why do *all* my media players crash exactly after two stops?

Whether it's the same song or different, that are on my computer, they always make the player crash (that is, it freezes and I have to kill it through the task manager), and weirdly it leaves no event viewer log. The only thing I can play on them now is online radio, as all the songs there are regarded as a single stream.

This is really annoying, as for a while now I just can't play my own music and always end up on random tunes.

Just curious. Is your OS Windows? Are you using their media player or a third party one like VLC?

XP, yes, and they crash with anything, whether it's WMP or Winamp.

What do you mean after two stops?

After two songs or so are played. They run through and then it freezes after the second one finishes.

Can you play multiple songs by playing a song and then closing and reopening the player? If so, I'd guess that maybe there's a library that WMP and Winamp have in common that's causing the bug. You could try downloading another player and using that, since it might not use the same thing. If not, then it isn't the media player, and the only thing I can think of is the sound driver. You could try getting the latest drivers for your soundcard.

Also, does this affect playing multiple videos, or only multiple sound files?

VLC is fairly stand-alone and might not share any libraries with these players. It is often regarded as bomb-proof.

Indeed VLC works for music (though in the last year or so it's been occassionally crashing with some movies too, and some other quirks), but I use a wireless keyboard to play/stop Winamp normally, with icons that look like >/|| - this doesn't work with VLC. Any way to re-map that, if possible?

Oh, another pitiful shortfall of VLC I just found out: no support for MIDIs. I actually got quite a collection. 8O

VLC plays MIDI (since version 0.9.0), and requires VLC media player in Windows. You may also need to install a Soundfont (.SF2) file.

VLC has keyboard controls for most functions, http://www.keyxl.com/aaa4cff/235/VLC-ke ... rtcuts.htm , which you can remap in Tools > Preferences > Interface > Hotkeys settings, then check "Advanced options".

Oh no, VLC has, as well, started to crash... within mere seconds upon its opening, just as if it was never opened at all. And there's no logs anywhere, no error messages I can find! :(

I would recommend looking for spyware/malware/viruses on your computer.

VLC is fine for videos (internet rips mostly).

The players I use:

PowerDVD 10 for my dvd's and interlaced video, it gives the best picture and the deinterlacing is the best.

VLC - For internet rips like xvids, or sampling files etc..

Foobar2000 - This is THE BEST music player ever!

Hm, I'm managing to play MP3s without any crashing using RealPlayer now. I suppose it must use different libraries or something...
