I'm sure that some of you guys write websites and put them up. And, I'm sure that I'll never meet a smarter group of people anywhere else.

I'm writing a website (in XHTML), and I want to put it up somewhere that is free.

What is your recommendation?

000webhost.com works fine for that purpose.
If you want yourdomain.ext instead of yourdomain.blabla.ext you can use dot.tk for free name.tk domain.
