How do I update my free Avast without paying?
I am using Google Chrome. I downloaded and installed Avast (about a year ago I think), and I have updated it since but I can't remember how I did it without being charged. As I updated it, it also downloaded and updated the adblock and something else (can't remember what it was but was useful), and surfing the web has been easy and enjoyable. But just recently I have noticed endless ads popping up again each time I click the mouse (usually only on Wrong Planet and Youtube), so I suppose something's gone out of date and needs seeing to.
I clicked on the Avast antivirus icon and it says everything is running normally and is all up to date, but it can't be because the ads are creeping back in again. Everywhere I look on the Avast antivirus home page it says that updates are available but then I can't continue until I have paid for it. What's the point in being called ''Free Avast Antivirus'' if it isn't free?
I don't know how to delete and re-load it. I hate getting these things from the web because I don't always trust what I'm downloading. That's what caused Internet Explorer to give up, I downloaded adblock from a thing I found on Google and it gave me a virus that molded itself into my computer system, and had to have a computer technician out to fix it.
I am uncomfortable with using a card online to pay for these things. I only know the basics of using a computer, and so I don't trust paying for things online. That is why I use free Avast Antivirus, but because it's free I suppose there is a catch, as usual.
Is there anyone here who is able to explain to me in English how to update my Avast antivirus system without paying? Sorry for being dim.

Ordinarily I hate this sort of response myself, however (not knowing the specific solution to your problem) I would like to suggest you consider replacing avast! with AVG.
The reason I would suggest doing so is that I have used AVG Free for several years and have had no problems. For example, I haven't been seeing any pop-ups on WP. But most importantly, I've had no problem with updates. In fact, AVG regularly notifies me of an update and then I just follow the instructions.
The only caution is you most pay very close attention you aren't requesting the paid version - I would consider that usual for such products.
Apparently the only feature avast! has that AVG hasn't is a boot scan however I believe there are other products for that if you think you need it.
Apparently these two products are generally considered comparable. Here is a link to an article to support that claim:
AVG vs. avast!
BTW you seem rather timid about doing such things on your computer. Perhaps you should ask family members etc. if they can help.
The free version of Avast is a virus scanner only.
To stop pop-ups you need to install the browser extension Adblock Plus.
To block trackers install the browser extension Ghostery.
