I'm going to stop recommending Mint to people, I had a NIGHTMARE with the XFCE edition of Maya on a friend's computer, then the LTS they released a couple of weeks later gave me similar problems.

Ubuntu 14.04 is really slick, but if you're running older hardware I strongly recommend getting Xubuntu instead. Yeah... it has the XFCE desktop, but you can customise it to look like Unity. 8)

Yeah I don't like mint took away the mark all updates button in synaptic. I have also seen lxde customized to look like unity. I actually dual boot into a distro called lxle sometimes and it has a preconfigure lxde that is similar to unity in some respects but doesn't have all the online search in dash stuff.
