Tesla was a genuine genius, however in some regards he was a crackpot. He believed in the existence of aether, an elastic light carrying substance that fills all of space, but miraculously does not slow planets down as they move through space under the influence of gravity. This in s;pite of the fact the Michelson and Morley disproved the existence of aether in their famous set of interferometer experiments in 1885. He also though he could transmit substantial electrical currents through the earth. He had no idea that the core of the earth is molten iron and nickle and would diffuse any electrical flow.

I'm not sure that this makes him a crackpot. Most physicists at the time believed in the existence of aether. Even Hendrik Lorentz continued to believe in the existence of aether until the day he died, even though he was the one who discovered the formulas for time dilation and length contraction independently of Einstein.
