I have a high functioning autistic 10 year old son who is very interested in animation. I want to do everything I reasonably can to encourage him especially during his summer vacation . A tool he could use to put some of his ideas in motion would be, I think, a good place to start.

He's high-functioning, and has had no problem figuring out at least the basics but to begin with simpler is very likely better. It doesn't have to be free, although I'd certainly consider free software if there's something suitable, but in any event I'd like to keep the cost modest.

Problem is I dont have much knowledge on this so was planning to get a high school kid to tutor him or any online classes if that'll help.

Please suggest how to go about it or any animation program which can be used as a beginner.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Scratch is a fantastic first language for getting into software development and animation.

There are some tutorials here: https://scratch.mit.edu

A more advanced tool like Blender (https://www.blender.org) might be a bit much at this stage but it might be something worth installing and playing with. Perhaps download an example file or two an play around with it. Thats what i did and enjoyed it.

This appears to be the same topic/question cross-posted in the Parenting subforum by tmmmmm:
