So my new obsession is Numbers Stations and I am looking for a shortwave radio that can tune them in. I have heard that single side-band may be needed but I can't find anything that says for sure. I picked out a cheap radio (because I do not want to spend that much on an obsession) but it does not have SSB. The cheapest model that does is out of my price range.

Does anyone know if you need a shortwave radio with SSB to hear numbers stations?

There is a bulletin board and community where people post their spy station findings here:

They are a little rare nowadays, but sure enough the board noted one going right now on 11.683 AM . I tuned in, and there it is - sequences of five numbers in spanish with tones between. Probably cuba. Strong signal.

You often need SSB to get these and the pirates, who are more interesting in my opinion. There are some radios here, you need something good but not ridiculous. Grundigs are cool, and you can travel with them.

There are some online radios too. Lemme check ...
