Will a 400W power supply be enough? (No video card.)

Yes. I'm building another one. (This is bad. I can't stop. It's fun.)

What would these results mean? Been told here I must be a "half pint".

The i5-6500 CPU is only 65 watts max, the mobo and memory won't add much more.

400 watts is plenty *IF* it's a good quality PSU. Keep in mind that if you do run a discrete video card, the wattage will need to be taken into account. If you just use the i5's integrated graphics, they are included in the 65w.

If it's a cheap whitebox (no-name/generic chinese) PSU, it could be marketed as 1000 watts and still not put out stable voltages at 100 watts. That said, I've run extremely lightly loaded systems similar to yours with cheaply made PSU's for years without problems. I can't visit the NewEgg link right now to see the brand, sorry!

Cases with built-in power supplies are usually no-name crap, with the exception of some Cooler Master cases. 400W would be enough power (unless you decide to add a dedicated GPU), but I would recommend getting a 400W-450W PSU, from a known brand like EVGA, Seasonic, Corsair, Antec, XFX etc. My PC is currently running on an EVGA 600W Bronze PSU, definitely not the best PSU, but it works well, and it is cheap. I can't post links since I'm a new user, but a good budget PSU would be the EVGA 450W Bronze PSU on Newegg.

What are you going to connect to it later? High end graphics cards in SLI/Crossfire modes? 37 harddrives? Professional audio equipment? I assume you are not going to run it without storage or a good graphics card.

Go with 700-1K. Just because it says so-and-so many watts does not mean that it will burn that every second, it's just its max output and you are not really losing anything by getting a high end PSU.

You can calculate it here but to be honest, 400 watts will be plenty. Many technicians will recommend that you should always install a PSU that is more than necessary to leave yourself headway for future upgrades but since you are building this as an experiment, 400 watts will be fine.

You could even install a GTX 950 since it runs from the motherboard's PCI-E slot and only consumes 60 watts, it would offer a significant boost over Integrated graphics if you are planning on playing games at 1080p.

Not that I encourage this, but I once ran an overclocked Pentium Dual Core rig with multiple hard drives and about half a dozen fans off of an old 350w power supply, since the 400w supply I had installed was starting to die. I'm honestly amazed that power supply held up.

Don't cheap out on the PSU, it is the most important part of a computer and it has the potential to take other hardware with it if you get one thats crap. Personally I accept no less then a bronze rated Corsair.

Also PSUs that come with computer cases are notorious for being complete crap. SeaSonic is suppose to have some decent power supplies to but I only buy Corsair now. All my current computers have Corsair and no I am not advertising Corsair, they are actually a bit over priced to be honest but you do get good quality with them.

I'd google around the brands but don't get an off brand, most of those drop voltage at high current. Sometimes to the point that devices will power off and frequently to the point that the PSU will just explode.

Good advice. I bought a Corsair CS650M for my main rig and it has been a great power supply. Recently I went through a bit of a brownout, and while some of my other devices turned off, my computer kept going like nothing even happened. I was running PCem installing Magic: The Gathering while it happened too, and that was using a LOT of CPU. Maybe I just got lucky, but I think I can thank the capacitors in my PSU.

I've used 500w Corsair's in my first two builds. I suppose not too far down the road I could get another and replace the power supply that comes with the case. I was actually trying to do this fast and cheap to get it done before July 29th and use a Windows 7 disc then upgrade to Windows 10 while there was still time for the free upgrade.

Since then, I've pretty much decided to get a Windows 10 license and use an install disc created from the MS's Media Creation Tool, so the cutoff date's not important now.

(Then a friend gave me a computer that'd failed on him "for parts". A half hour later I had it running a new install of Windows 10. Turned out his hard drive had died. With the new drive I put in, the thing is fine. I DO NOT NEED MORE COMPUTERS!! ! :D )
