When I was young, a movie called "Journey to the Center of the Earth" was shown. Very much a fantasy flick.

Well scientist are discovering new findings related to the composition of the Earth. They found a structure which lies 1,802 below the surface that they have named "Ultraslow-Velocity Zone". It is a widespread, heterogenous structures—areas of unusually dense, hot rock—at the core-mantle boundary than previously known.

For reference, the radius of the Earth is around 3,958.8 miles. According to the Internet "Earth's core is the very hot, very dense center of our planet. The ball-shaped core lies beneath the cool, brittle crust and the mostly-solid mantle. The core is found about 2,900 kilometers (1,802 miles) below Earth's surface, and has a radius of about 3,485 kilometers (2,165 miles)."

So I am trying to interpret the article. What did they discover? Since it was already known that the core is 1,802 miles below the surface of the planet, are they saying that the core is denser than originally thought?

In looking at the video, if one substitutes "Impact Event" in place of "Earthquake", you can visualize the effect of the shock wave produced by a large asteroid/comet impact as it travels through the Earth. There is a focused discontinuity as it reaches the other side of the globe. This is a Earth's crust breaking event.

it's the firewall to keep scientists from climbing down deeper to the center.
