I understand Arch but I don't understand people who feel intellectual using a browser that you just need to follow a manual... nothing against YOU but is a generic opinion. I mean I could understand with Gentoo or even Debian but Arch is more just a tool.
Btw not for me, I prefer stable over rolling release but I don't understand the "btw" is a cool system which got pretty amazing "shortcut".

I'm thinking of switching to a different distribution tbh. I'm growing tired of rolling release. Perhaps I'd want a Fedora. Debian is a bit too stable for my taste, but I like it too.

I use Firefox as the internet browser, Arch is the Linux distribution.

And I was joking about better about using Arch

Don't worry I just annoying people say "I'm genius becuz I'm using Arch" (and they are the same who use Kali as main desktop Linux)

I've been having one issue with OpenSuSE Tumbleweed -- ProtonVPN takes a long tme to load and shut down. From what I could find on the Internet, people on Tumbleweed were having issues with it several months ago. I was running the OpenSuSE Leap instead.

Last night I tried switching to something Fedora calls a "spin". I tried installing their Fedora XFCE but it wouldn't install. So I tried their Fedora Cinnamon. It installed fine but it turns out that I would need to install pretty much every package that I use (and there are a lot of them) by the command line.

I'm going to try going back to OpenSuSE Leap tonight.

Fortunately, I have three solid state disks that I can use for the OS. I'll just unplug this one and the other drives, plug in one of the other two solid state disks, and install to it.

One time I tried installing without disconnecting the old drives and the install process end up using a disk containing music, audio books, and radio shows as a swap drive. So now I make sure when I'm installing that only the one drive is plugged in.

All of my regular files are on other drives and mounted on the system so I just have to add those drives to /etc/fstab instead of having to back them up and copy them over.

Could be that it's just to prompt orientated, for a PC it doesn't work anymore.....people want GUI
I can still open html in edit and even manually edit scripts, I can create total page in edit but formatting would be out, much easier with GUI

Depends on what you working on, some large retailers or airports may still run in oldshool Unix or mainframe....

My servers all have windows managers that can be started, but I almost never do. For what it's worth, I probably only even look at the monitor when I have to restart everything after a power outage. The rest of the time, I connect to them with ssh from my workstation.

If I could afford it, what I'd really love is a cluster of computers as a workstation. That is, instead of one computer doing everything, each of the computers would have a purpose. And, of course, they could have different operating systems.

Think of it like a Qubes OS computer with separate machines instead of virtual machines.

It would likely be possible to use raspberry pi for some of the computers.

I may be a bit late to the party here, but, you might check out void linux. I've been using it for a while now. It is said to be more BSD-like, but I am not familiar enough with the BSD's to be able to compare them. I think one of the original devs used to work on netBSD. Anyway, I like it's package manager, and it has been stable for me for a number of years now.
If you start to tinker, you should be able to get the memory usage of most any distro down to something very manageable. Init systems, and active daemons and processes can make some difference (although not really a huge difference). Biggest thing, I think, has to do with the desktop environment and all of it's features. My current system uses about 200 mb ram just to idle on the "desktop". Using i3 window manager and currently don't have any compositing going on (compositors can eat ram fast, but at the moment I don't have one installed and running because this is a today fresh install on a new-to-me machine). There is a window manager called "dwm" (dynamic window manager) that gets resource usage down even further, and I think the Sway window manager, which as far as I know is a wayland fork of i3wm brings in a compositor and lowers ram usage at the same time (from some very brief tests I did a few years ago).

I just ordered a new Dell computer about 3 am this morning. It comes with 32 gigabytes of memory.

My intention is to use it for the Qubes OS.

Choosing a computer name is always important. Since it has been described as the operating system for the truly paranoid, I'm thinking of calling it "PARANOIA" and making the username "PARANOID".

Sometimes, OpenSuSE can be rather irritating.

I have Tumbleweed on my new workstation and upgraded this evening to yesterday's release.

After rebooting, it couldn't handle DNS any more. I could ping IP addresses, but I could not ping them by name.

In other words, "ping 8.8.8.8" worked fine, but "ping dns.gruver.com" failed without much explanation. I could, however, do "dig @8.8.8.8 www.wrongplanet.net" and get a valid response. The computer was attempting to handle as a middleman between itself and the DNS servers.

I tried rebooting. That made no difference. I tried disabling the network and reenabling it, it still failed. After editing the DHCP list in the network connections, it continued to fail.

After a variety of attempts to restart the internal DHCP, I finally logged in as root and tried to use "vi /etc/resolv.conf". After entering a valid resolv.conf, I could not exit the editor. It turned out that resolv.conf was a link to /run/netconfig/resolv.conf which didn't exist. I renamed the resolv.conf to resolv.conf.0 and reentered a valid resolv.conf and that worked.

This isn't the first time I've had this problem with OpenSuSE Tumbleweed.

I wish FreeBSD had better hardware support.

BSD guy here, primarily running NetBSD on servers and recently on a 2008 Asus EeePC netbook, on which even Wi-Fi works (NetBSD has virtually no wireless support). Nice rock-solid toaster operating system.
I also run FreeBSD on my workstation, but it ain't that stable and feels a bit messy. But NetBSD doesn't support my iGPU and Wi-Fi, and Linux has no rc.d or normal audio system

Actually it's not that bad, most current hardware will work. Unless ye mean Wi-Fi which yeah, is terrible (still best of the *BSDs, though)

I didn't know what to think of it. I wanted a command line and considered it to be a toy.

Even today, I use a command line in a UNIX shell more than I use windowing environments (not to be confused with any Microsoft product) for anything other than running xterm. I have computers that are capable of running a windowing environment, but have never ran one on them.
