Screen resolution issues
I have ubuntu (8.10) running on one of my machines, and I have a monitor that maxes out at 1280x1024 resolution. Unfortunately, afaik, ubuntu doesn't support that resolution on a clean install, and I'm sitting here on 1024x768... is there some package I can download or a config file I can tweak to get it to run the resolution I need?
Welcome in the murky world of configuring the X-server.
The very first step is to establish the graphic card. Run a lspci and than you should see the graphic card. You may ask google which driver is needed. If you are lucky the driver has been already installed, otherwise download the driver and follow the instructions to enter the driver into to the kernel-modules.
Than you need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf (make a backup-copy first!) and enter the driver into the "Module"-section and add to the "Screen"-section with the best resolution you may assume.
