Ever watch a movie or play a video game and find one of the characters is very...familiar?

Sometimes it's never outright stated that the character in question is on the spectrum, or the similarity is just due to experiences common to defamiliarized or "outcast" characters (e.g. Steve Rogers is neurotypical but I find his disconnection from contemporary cultural trends relatable).

I bring this up because the Dora the explorer live action movie's characterization of teenaged Dora was uncannily like my experience in high school. Did anyone else whose seen it have a similar feeling of Deja Vu? Or have you seen other films that produced this experience?

Data

Relating to Data was my first inkling that I was a f**k up , I was 16 and always thought I was normal - ignorance was bliss.

Oh there’s so many of these I notice because all I do all day every day is self project

My running list is:

-Spock and Data like the previous to answers said
-Sherlock Holmes (duh)
-Star from Star Vs the Forces of Evil
-Zuko from ATLA
-Otis from $3x Education
-any absentminded professor trope
-Dexter (not the best example though)
-Chidi from the good place
-Will from Hannibal (though I think it’s actually supposed to be canonly implied as he does speech mirroring and such in the books)

Im gonna stop now cause I’ve already embarrassed my self by listing a ton but yeah!!

Not sure about Star, seems more someone who is new to a place vs someone with any autistic traits.

Steve Buscemi in the movie Ghost World.

A more recent example..in the movie Eighth Grade, I think the boy the main character befriended at the end of the movie was clearly on the spectrum.

Maybe Eugene on the Walking Dead? Or did they come out and say he was autistic? I stopped watching, though his was classic Hollywood autism.

Kevin Spencer

I gotta warn you, there are a lot of things wrong with this kid. Some moments, he has trouble socializing and everyone thinks of him as mentally handicapped. Other moments he seems capable of being a savant when he's doing his usual sociopathic activities.

Ariel, the Little Mermaid, has quite a few traits similar to a girl or woman with Asperger's. She prefers to hang out with animals instead of her own kind, is not interested in her own world but intensely interested in the human world culture, and had a huge collection of human-made object that reflected her interest/obsession.

Of course, when I first saw the movie I thought she was just being a rebellious teenager who just happened to be a mermaid, and I'm sure that was the writer's intention as well.

I hate it when people criticize the movie because it was given a happy ending, or because Ariel gave up everything she had just to be with a human prince. She was obviously interested in the human world even before she met Prince Eric, and it wasn't until after King Triton wrecked her collection and her life that she decided to become a human.
