Nightmare For A Nightingale

Episode of 'Thriller' from 24 April 1976. An opera singer is stalked by her husband, who had apparently died eleven years previously, and to make matters worse she accidentally kills him, and the plot continues along these lines....Okay, it's as daft as ever, as usual in this series, but it's a pretty classy production and well worth watching. The only downside is the ridiculously over the top performance from the Italian husband, played by a certain Keith Baxter, which could have come straight out of Brian De Palma's 1983 movie 'Scarface'.

Yet another drama which clearly owes its inspiration to the classic 1950s French film Diabolique.

Coronation Street

The first episode of the year from January 1983. The very early stages of the affair between Deirdre Barlow and Mike Baldwin, which was to develop and explode with huge consequences later in the year. We also see Annie Walker still in charge of 'The Rovers Return', but the actress who played her (Doris Speed) was looking a bit the worse for wear, and had less than a year to go in the role, I think.

Three episodes of Coronation Street from 5 Jan 1983 to 12 Jan 1983.

Deirdre Barlow is still seeing Mike Baldwin, but is very uneasy about it all. Chalkie Whitely is having a difficult time with Phyllis Pearce, who insists on looking after him while he's off work. Brian Tilsley gets into a potentially violent dispute with Len Fairclough, who refuses to honour a maintenance agreement on Brian's garage in pursuit of a personal grudge. Annie Walker gives her warring staff at t' Rovers an ultimatum to make up and get back to work or else..... 8O

Coronation Street , episodes from 17th and 19th January 1983

Deirdre Barlow and Mike Baldwin go out for a meal at an expensive Italian restaurant, and she agrees to go back to his place in his Jaguar afterwards. The machinists at Baldwin's factory agree to supply market trader Sammy Patel with handbags they will make behind their boss's back (how on earth would they get away with that?), but Baldwin finds out and makes a deal himself with Sammy. The latter is a rather comical and stereotypical Indian man who would never be portrayed like this nowadays...

Coronation Street, episodes from 1983 (24 Jan, 26 Jan, 31 Jan)

Annie Walker is most distressed when her insurance company will not pay for repairs to her beloved Rover 2200, which it declares to be a write-off. Suzie Birchall returns to the Street after an absence in London, and billets herself on old friend Gail Tilsley, who is now married with a child and is not too pleased about the situation. Emily Bishop learns of the affair between her boss Mike Baldwin and her best friend Deirdre Barlow - this spells big trouble for Deirdre.

Legacy For The Saint

An episode from the final series of 'The Saint', shown in the UK on 18 April 1969.

OMG, where does one start with this stuff? Okay, it was a show made by a company called ITC for UK Independent Television (ITV) and spanned most of the 1960s. Starred Roger Moore as Simon Templar, who is usually described as sophisticated, debonair, suave, dapper and all the rest of it, mainly because he talks with an educated English accent, wears expensive clothes, travels all around the world, and knows phrases like 'Ciao', 'Per Piacere' and 'Bonsoir'. En route he fights crime, impresses surprisingly gullible attractive young middle class women, and always comes out on top without a hair out of place.

This episode is just ridiculous, with all sorts of contrived and ludicrous situations revolving around a gangster's faked death and a bullion heist he has set up in order to humiliate and destroy his crooked rivals. Stars Stephanie Beacham as the gangster's supposedly 18-year-old daughter (looking all of her 22 years and more here), who is also involved in the plot, though I never managed to work out exactly how.

To Kill A Saint

Episode of 'The Saint', transmitted on 11 June 1967. Another daft episode, with a convoluted story in which it seems every one of the cast is conspiring to kill another one. Never did quite work out exactly what was going on. This is set in Paris, and the French accents of the British cast are hilarious.

Simon Templar, played by Roger Moore (centre), Valerie Leon to his right (she starred in the 1972 Hammer film 'Blood From The Mummy's Tomb'). The actress on the left looks as if she's from one of the Universal horror films from the 1940s.

Three episodes of Coronation Street from mid-February 1983. The affair between Mike Baldwin and Deirdre Barlow comes to a head when Deirdre admits to it during a row with her husband Ken. Suzy Birchall gets a job as a barmaid at the Rover's, but creates tensions because of her laziness and unreliability at the home of Elsie Howard, with whom she is lodging. Stan Ogden is unable to support himself and Hilda from his window-cleaning round owing to his increasing physical incapacity.
