MegaMan NT Warrior

The English dub is on Capcom's YouTube channel.

If only I could find the rest with English subtitles.

Two more episodes of The Protectors from 1972, namely 'Ceremony for the Dead' and 'It Was All Over in Leipzig'.

More half-baked tosh from Gerry Anderson's ITC show. Both of these episodes seem to be set on a Mediterranean island, possibly Malta or Gozo. In the first one, an Arab head of state is kidnapped, and the perpetrator is revealed as his own wife. In the second, a military coup by an ex-lover of the Contessa di Contini is thwarted ...by the Contessa and her fellow Protectors.

All very rushed and unconvincing, within the confines of the 24 minute episode length. The most interesting bit comes in the earlier episode, with a tribute to Eisenstein's 'Odessa Steps' scene from Battleship Potemkin.

Van Der Valk: an episode called 'A Rose From Mr Reinhard' from September 1973.

This was a British TV series about a Dutch detective based in Amsterdam. It's perhaps best known for its stirring signature tune, which got to number one in the UK singles chart.

A high class call girl, Karen Seger, is found murdered and Van Der Valk faces considerable obstruction from various quarters, including his own superiors, in his efforts to investigate.

Van Der Valk to Karen, shortly before her murder: "We can't have our respectable citizens, er....especially the attractive ones, being frightened in public places".

LOL, that line hasn't aged too well, has it?

Here's the signature tune I referred to, played by The Simon Park Orchestra.

Last night we finished watching our way through:

Red Dwarf [1988–?]

A wonderful Science-Fiction SITCOM.

Really-fun! S T R O N G   R e c o m m e n d ! fun!

If you decide to watch the series I recommend watching all 13 seasons (just 74 episodes) in broadcast order since there are a few cumulative changes as the show progresses.

Red Dwarf is a huge mining spaceship, 10km × 8km × 6km, with a crew of 169. Dave Lister is the lowest ranking crew-member on the ship; he assists with maintenance of the soup dispensers. He manages to get in trouble and put into a time-stasis booth and while he is in it there is a terrible radiation accident which kills the rest of the crew. The ship's computer, Holly, keeps Dave in stasis until it is safe for him to come out...three million years later.

That's how the series starts in "The End" but I think it gets better when it runs "Backwards". I think it is especially good when we get "Back to Reality" and I recommend seeing the movie Blade Runner before you go "Back to Earth". I admit I thought "The Beginning" would've been a good place to end the series but they continued on to "The Promised Land".

And it is at least good for the whole series, very funny, and sometimes outstanding.

Van Der Valk

An episode called 'Death By The Sea' from August 1973. A high-flying banker murders his wife and makes it look like a swimming accident. There are the usual twists and turns in the plot, one being that the banker gets away with it, which was not at all common in police dramas of this era, where crime usually had to be seen not to pay. The banker's girlfriend is played by Joanna Dunham, who was to play Van Der Valk's wife in the third series (1977).

Derek

A series broadcast on the UK's Channel 4 about ten years ago. It features Ricky Gervais as an employee in an old people's care home, and is both funny and touching in parts. Also, it's downright crass and vulgar at times as well, but you have to accept that's what you're going to get with anything associated with Gervais. Interestingly Gervais's 'Derek' character is clearly meant to be autistic, though how well this is portrayed is debatable.

Van der Valk

An episode called 'A Man Of No Importance' from 1973. A dead man is discovered on a barge in Amsterdam - it turns out that he was thrown from a sleeper train as it crossed a bridge over a canal, and Van der Valk has to reconstruct the man's complicated relationship history over the previous dozen years.

There's a certain amount of similarity between this series and one which began in the UK a couple of years later called 'The Sweeney'. Both were made by the same TV company, and both feature maverick detectives who are a handful for their superiors, but the later series was a good deal more violent, with many episodes being resolved by punch-ups and shootings. 'The Sweeney' featured Detective Inspector Regan, played by John Thaw, but in many respects Van der Valk has more in common with the 1980s detective 'Inspector Morse', also played by John Thaw.

Yellowjackets season 2 episode 2.

Creepy. And chilling at the end. I mean, we knew it was going to happen. But still. It happened.

Also, I just find Christina Ricci so funny in this show.
