Dead Like Me (2004)

Season 2, episode 15 - Haunted

Last episode of season 2. Last episode of the series.
It takes place on Halloween, and all the grim reapers get assignments that are related. There is a serial killer.

I really miss these characters.
Mandy Patinkin plays Rube, the reaper that organizes everyone. He is not the head boss. He does not know who that is. Even the afterlife has pecking order and it is a mystery.
Some backstory. In episode 14 (Always) Rube breaks a cardinal rule. He looks up his family, his daughter, who is old and in a nursing facility. He has her Post-it. Post-its are what Rube he gives the other reapers so they know who they are suppose to reap and the time they die. In a previous episode, Rube learns that money he'd sent his widow was never delivered. That has an impact on him. Being there to take his daughter's soul also has an impact on him. It is reflected in episode 15. He is in mourning. Mild tangent. When he first visits his daughter, the nurse that helps him is Yeardley Smith, aka Lisa Simpson. And correction. Yeardley is also a grim reaper, and it is her that reaps his daughter's soul. I just started watching episode 14, and it came back to me. Stupid brain memory.

I've always liked this show. It is funny, and it can be melancholy. Mason is hysterical.

If you watch this episode and the previous one I posted, I think YouTube has all of them. I have not verified that.

Sky, eh? Last had that in 1998.

Talking of the late 1990s, I've just finished watching episodes of Coronation Street from January 1999. Quite a lot has been going on recently - Des Barnes has been murdered, Alf Roberts has died at a New Year party and Jim McDonald has been in a wheelchair after son Steve pushed him off a scaffolding. Natalie Barnes has taken over as landlady of The Rovers Return after buying the business from Alec Gilroy.

Formula One Sprint Race in Brazil. The Qualifying for the race on Sunday, was postpone because of heavy rain.

Dead Like Me

Season 1,
episodes 1 - Pilot - disc 1
episodes 2 - Dead Girl Walking - disc 2
episodes 3 - Curious George - disc 2
episodes 4 - Reapercussions - disc 2
episodes 5 - Reaping Havoc - disc 2
episodes 6 - My Room - disc 2

I forgot how controlling George's mom, Joy, is. Her daughter dies and everything gets packed into boxes The boxes are then labeled and hidden away. Meanwhile, George's dad and her little sister, Reggie, mourn the best they can while the mother says things like "If you don't want it to hurt, then don't think about it." and "What? I should build a holy shrine to George?" Joy just wants everything to go back to "normal." Initially, she is not very likable. It is no accident her name is Joy Lass (joyless). Still, for some reason I always like Cynthia Stevenson in the role.

The whole series was about change, growing, and appreciating life.

In episode 4, Rube plans on taking Mason (the Brit) on a reaping mission where they would end up in Las Vegas or Atlantic City, somewhere with legal gambling. Everything starts to fall apart when while waiting for the bus, there is a baby crying and it will not calm down. It cries and cries and cries and cries and cries and cries, and Rube says "I'm going to kill that f***ing baby." A woman hears him, and reports him to security. What Rube does not know is Mason has at least one balloon of heroin hidden in his... <whisper> behind </whisper>. It is not found, even though Mason is searched, but when they go back to wait for the bus, the baby is still crying, Rube says the exact same thing again, and one of the balloons pop. Reapers cannot die from an overdose. He just feels like he wants to die. Anyway, that was one of my favorite Mason stories.
There's more but I need to leave something for the curious.

Gunsmoke! Season 1 Episode 3: Word of Honor. I love the show and am definitely going to watch more!

Last night we finished watching our way through season 1 of The Orville [2017–2022].

Visually, it appears to have been inspired by Star Trek.

Storywise, it is better than Star Trek.

The Orville has plot points that make you think, and make you think thought went into its writing.
