Tom Good calls his wife Barbara "b***h" in the first 2 minutes. Surprised me that did.

I never noticed that, probably because I'm so old it doesn't register. Those were different times. I daren't list the words you could get away with in those days.

Anyway it's a good show. A tad unrealistic to try to be self-sufficient in food by turning a suburban back garden into a farm, but it's only a show.

I'm catching up on the episodes of Vera they put out in 2024 that I didn't know they'd made till a couple of months ago. She's like a Northern England version of Columbo without the trick of pretending to be stupid and nice. And her clothes are a bit less slovenly.

It's a bit tense in Gilead

I think they edit it out when they show it on TV nowadays, and probably for the last 30 years - it does come across as weirdly aggressive to a modern ear, especially on what is otherwise a quite gentle show.

But it was there on whatever streaming service I was watching it on.

I'd like to check whether it's there on my copy. Should be able to dig it out. So it's season 1, episode 1, and within the first few minutes, is it?

My ex-wife and I use to watch The Good Life every week back in the '80s on PBS. In the U.S. it was called Good Neighbors.
One might excuse Tom. As I recall, it was his birthday, and I think she implied he was getting old?

Anyway, what I recently watched, this morning...

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
from April 27, 2025 - RFK Jr (streamed on Max)
IMDB Description wrote:
John Oliver discusses how public health agencies in the U.S. under RFK Jr.'s gone wild as Trump described. As massive layoff is happening in different crucial departments he discussed what RFK is doing, in many ways it will impact the general people and the troubling direction these all are going.

But never fear. RFK Jr is going to get to the bottom of this Autism epidemic by September of this year (2025).

On the buses, foggy night

Good life - i think early 70s? oh mid 70s
it was fashion then
i remember our needlework & knitting and --something, teacher happened to live for a little while next door, sometimes my friend and me visited, she had one room full with a loom, all that crafting and self sufficiency was a big thing then

best

:P

Handmaid's Tale series 3 episode 10 I think

It always makes me laugh when they conduct their secret conversations in the refrigerators at the supermarket

It's like little phone booths they invented for themselves and no one who's not a handmaid hasn't cottoned on to it

I never appreciated that till the bloke who played the miserable supervisor played Alexei Sayle's scriptwriter in The All New Alexei Sayle Show.

There was a joke shop in Sheffield that had the most miserable bugger I'd ever seen manning the checkout. I mean who could be that miserable if they were surrounded by plastic ears, exploding fags, fart gum and whoopee cushions? I loved that shop.

Catching up on programs.

Elsbeth
Season 2, episode 18 - I Know What You Did Thirty-Three Summers Ago
Enjoyed the episode.

Ghosts
Season 4, episode 20 - I Know What You Did Thirty-Seven Summers Ago
It was only when I researched the titles that I noticed Elsbeth's and Ghost's titles were the same, four years off.
420 place a role in this episode. Season 4, episode 20. The show takes play on April 20.
The ghost find out they can get a contact high when Pete, trying to bust the assistant cook, Gabe, while Gabe gets high in his car.
The show features the attic teenage ghost, Stephanie. She died on prom night. Her date would become mayor, who in modern day is played by Justin Kirk, who played Andy Botwin on Weeds.
The episode ends with Gabe in his car again, unaware that Trever, Flower, Hetty, and Stephanie are in the car with him. Flower is unfazed. "Guys, I don't feel anything. I don't think it's working." She is always high because she was high when she tried to make friends with a bear in the woods.
As always, funny.
For the record, I'm 65, and I've never been high. Pot has been offered to me several times in my teen and twenties, but I had my reasons for turning it down. Mostly ego. I was a surrealist painter and my weirdness creativity came straight from my brain and not from substances. I don't regret it.

The Simpsons
Season 36, episode 18 - Abe League of Their Moe
Grandpa Simpson, Moe, Bart, the Isotopes, sports betting. Abe is horrified by what's happened to baseball.
I was trying to figure out how to write horrified in Grandpa Simpsons shaky voice. I failed.

Will Trent
Season 3, episode 15 - The Most Beautiful, Fierce, Smart, Powerful Creature in the Entire World
Will deals with the accidental shooting and resulting death of a kid when the kid's little brother shows up to shoot him.
Angie deals with her mother, an addict, who is in the hospital dying.
Meanwhile, there is a death and stolen diamonds.
I enjoyed this episode. Ramon Rodriguez is a gem of an actor.

Finally watched the last episode of Adolescence.

That was a weird show. Very powerful. But it didn't do what I expected it to.

All the previews I read were going on about how it was about the ways that kids can become radicalised by online content. But it wasn't really about that at all. It barely mentioned it. It really just focused on the emotional fallout of a hate crime committed by a kid. Not a bad thing, just not how it was sold, imo.

Acting was amazing though.

Another episode of Vera. She's starting to annoy me with the way she does this "we know you're guilty" insinuation thing when she doesn't know. I had that from the UK customs man on the way back from Amsterdam - "have you been in any coffee shops? You know what I mean, coffee shops, eh?" Of course I was as clean as a whistle. Anyway Vera's like that. Still, it's something to do, till something better comes along.
