People WERE in the wrong for keeping slaves and enacting Jim Crow laws—whether in the North, or the South.

Yes

I think the book and film was only about the girl's perception and experiences,
not the actual situation that was relevant to the time.

Just like most trashy fiction written by conceited authors.

They still show her as a jerkwad towards the female slaves though. Not the men, if you notice.

It's funny how people hold up Scarlett as a true Southern belle, but she was played by a British lady who is the main reason people like the movie.

If you watch the auditions...everyone else came across as unbearable,

only Vivien Leigh made her charming and entertaining enough that viewers can tolerate a whole film of this character without vomiting

I noticed that nobody in this movie bothered to attempt a southern accent, and Prissy had the strangest voice of any human being I ever heard! 8O

Nope. I would know, you see I'm from Georgia where the story was set.

Here's a video of what Georgia accents sound like. I'm from South Georgia like the guy on the right. Yes I pronounce oil as "oy-al" lol.

That sounds so different from what they showed....it sounds normal but with a british tone...
btw I kept imagining the girl in Scarlett's gowns and the guy in Ashley's pale blue outfit more than listening to their accents.

I have a thing about being annoyed by movies set in the south that either don't do the accents or do very fake accents. I guess maybe it's the Aspie in me? :P Now actors like Tom Hanks and Rue MacClanahan could do very convincing southern accents. Mister Hanks starred in two of my fav movies set in the south: Forrest Gump andThe Green Mile. Rue of course played Blanche in The Golden Girls which is my all-time fav TV show and Blanche was a belle from Georgia. Rue herself wasn't even from Georgia yet she played the character so convincingly. :)

Have to say that the actors must have succeeded at mannerisms and the general vibe.

In the video you have shared, the lady resembles Scarlett's behaviour, poise, vibes--if not Scarlett, another character, she would fit in fine in that film as an extra.

Saucy vibes, but polished and gracious (?) too.

Meanwhile the man has that laid back and good-humoured air like the men in the movie (aside from Rhett, who seemed totally removed from the normal men..almost a caricature)

I think it's the way they are interacting that makes these things show.

As you mentioned, Aspie-ness makes you notice the incongruity.

Me, I now concentrate on and pay extra attention to these things, mannerisms and interactions, to figure out how to describe them,
to
figure out WHY some people give certain vibes,
to form a pattern to match others to./.. so I can rely on THAT to try and gain some understanding ,

which helps in approaching people correctly so you don't offend etc.

i THINK it works...just takes time to build up the 'database'

Such women here in Georgia are referred to as "Georgia Peaches". :) They tend to be plump and curvy with a pleasant complexion and sassy attitudes yet they are also warm and charming. I've known many women in Georgia who look and act just like this woman from the video. Lol

The accents in the “accent tag” video are not heavy at all. I find the accent of those two to be modified by outside influence. The woman’s accent does get somewhat heavier as the video proceeds.

The B-52s are mostly natives of Albany, Georgia. They don’t speak with heavy accents.

The American pronunciations of words like 'route' and 'leisure' cracks me up sometimes. It was amusing to encounter the use of 'buggy' and 'clicker' by those people from Georgia in the video clip, where we in the UK would say 'trolley' and 'remote'.

We say “wagon” or “shopping cart” for “trolleys” here in NYC.

“Remote” or “channel changer” for “remote.”

A “trolley” or “trolley car” is the UK’s “tram”.

We say both “root” and “rawt” for “route.” “Leesure” for “leisure.”

Many towns and cities in the UK used to have 'trolleybuses'. These were doubledecker buses which ran off overhead electric power lines. They were phased out in the 1960s.

The picture below shows one of these in Stevenson Square in Central Manchester, alongside a conventional doubledecker bus.

I know Manchester has “trams” now.

I guess the overall European term was taken over the erstwhile UK term.

People have told me my accent isn't that heavy either and sounds more Midwestern than Southern.
