2000 Maniacs (1964)

A film directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis. Set in the Deep South of the USA, where the inhabitants of an obscure town lure 'Yankee' visitors to their doom as vengeance for a massacre by Northern forces at the end of the Civil War in 1865.

In the early to mid-1980s in the UK, there was a controversy about violent and gory films known as 'video nasties', which were banned by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government. Watching this movie, I had the impression that these must have been around for at least 15 years previously in some parts of the world. This is a pretty nasty film in parts, but it's also quite humorous and even clever to a degree, as in the ending.

Herschell Gordon Lewis would probably be on many people's shortlist for the worst film director of all time, along with the likes of Jess Franco, Ed Wood, Rene Cardona, Russ Meyer, etc, but this film is definitely one of his better ones, and doesn't really qualify as one of the all time shockers.

Salyut 7 (2017), it's a Russian movie about a real life fire about a Soviet space station in '85. Somewhat inaccurate and definitely unbelievable here and there, but a pretty good film about a fairly unknown event.

Last night I watched:

The Day Time Ended [1979]
<=>"A Mind-Bending Vortex of Terror!"

It struck me as being a so-so 1950's Science Fiction movie for children.

However, it was actually released in 1979.

Not painful to watch but nah! Not Recommended. nah! (It earned its IMDb user rating.)

I knew it was based on the real Pope's Exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth who claimed to have performed over 100,000 exorcisms and the story is part real and part fantasy and that's what drew me in.
It held my interest most of the way through, and Russel Crowes humour made the film more enjoyable. A fairly decent horror in my opinion.

One thing that bugged me was the voice of the demon , it was voiced by actor Ralph Ineson who does a lot of British adverts and has a very recognisable voice which killed my suspension of disbelief, I was expecting him to try and flog the Exorcist a Dacia :jester:

^ i'm not sure it's available to stream yet. As it's a Sony film who have a deal with Netflix it should drop on Netflix some time in the future.

OK :(

I'll try again for The Menu or any other horror movie.
I need to scream.
Speaking of which, I've never seen Scream.

You should watch the first movie. It's good. It's kind of stupid, but what horror movie isn't. lmao

Five Branded Women (1960)

In WW2 five Yugoslavian women are punished for having sexual relations with a German officer by having their heads shaved (the officer receives a much worse comeuppance). They then join the resistance (the partisans).

This is a very interesting and worthwhile film, though it was controversial when it came out and for many years thereafter, probably because it confronts the moral ambiguities and complexities of their situation, rather than being not much more than propaganda, as many WW2 films were at the time.

Participants include Jeanne Moreau, Barbara Bel Geddes, Vera Miles and Richard Basehart, who was in the popular 1960s American TV series 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' but the standout performance is from Silvana Mangano, who was the wife of the distinguished producer Dino di Laurentiis.

The film lacks a bit of polish at times, with some clumsy transitions, and the ending seems rather abrupt, but that was clearly deliberate.
