The Shakedown (1960)

Stars Terence Morgan, who played Sir Francis Drake in a TV series a short while after this, and Hazel Court, who had come to prominence in Hammer's first Frankenstein film in 1956, and was later well known for her role in Roger Corman's Masque of the Red Death (1964).

It's a British 'Film Noir' and thankfully, unlike the numerous examples of American Noirs I've seen (mainly from the 1940s), it actually has an intelligible plot, which revolves around the vice industry and blackmailing. The theme song, from which the movie takes its name, is pretty appalling, and can be heard around the 1:08:00 mark in the YouTube upload below....

Yesterday I saw 'Women Talking'

It was f*****g phenomenal.

I'm so glad I got to see it at the cinema. The script, the score, the shots, performances. As an allegory it was horrific and apt, and touched a truth that is probably felt at the heart of all women. At the end I just let myself cry.

I wanna see this so badly. I love Greta Gerwig.

Oh wait it's Sarah Polley? Even better. Can't wait.

Last night I watched:

I, Robot [2004]
<=>"One man saw it coming."

The film was "Inspired by Isaac Asimov's Book".

Like Asimov's book, this film has the Three Laws of Robotics:

beep-First Law
beep-A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction,
beep-allow a human being to come to harm.

beep-Second Law
beep-A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings
beep-except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

beep-Third Law
beep-A robot must protect its own existence
beep-as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

But asks what a powerful AI would do when human beings are harming themselves.
(Human beings harming themselves is not Science Fiction...it is, in many forms, in the news!)

Very good film. Very good Science fiction.

Excellent->good R E C O M M E N D E Dgood

Note: There are suspicions that Asimov was on the Spectrum.

Last night we watched:

Children of Men [2006]
<=>"No child has been born for 18 years."

Set in the UK in a dystopian future. For 18 years women have not had any babies (we are not told why) and so world civilization is slowly collapsing. One woman miraculously gets pregnant (no reason is given for how she got pregnant even though other women don't) but, unfortunately, she is a refugee and the UK considers refugees undesirables and so her life is not assured. A resistance group wants to get her to a secret lab that is trying to restore mankind's fertility.

The movie does a wonderful job of watching the difficulties encountered in transporting the pregnant woman.

The movie does not explain much of anything.

My bride liked the movie. I thought it was OK.

You should watch the first movie. It's good. It's kind of stupid, but what horror movie isn't. lmao

Should watch them all really. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 are good. 6 is a bit different to the other 5. 3 is a bit meh but worth a watch if you've never seen it before
