I strongly suggest the Planet of the Apes movies, especially the original, Escape from the Planet of the Apes (despite the incredibly upsetting ending), Battle for the Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Such great films and charming characters.
Also a 'making of' type documentary called Behind the Planet of the Apes, which describes the legacy of the films. It's very interesting and has plenty of wee widdle factoids. It's presented by Roddy McDowell (who played Cornelius and his son Ceasar in the films) and I have a man-crush on his voice.
As a little kid, I was a
Planet Of The Apes fanatic. It probably had something to do with an Aspie-ish obsession on my part. I especially liked the human-hating Ape commanders, like Ursus in
Beneath The Planet Of The Apes, and Urko from the short lived TV show. Something about the headgear and armor, I guess.
Funny that the gorillas were portrayed as the warlike apes, while the chimps were the peaceful homebodies, while in fact just the opposite is true in nature.
