Circus on PBS
I haven't watched it yet. Don't know if I really can without getting really upset. You see I worked there until first week of May 2009 when I got laid off.
Any way, PLEASE watch the program. I have heard comments on it. From what I have heard it's basically life at the Big Apple Circus. While working there I found it interesting to see all these people who desperately want to fit into the society of the circus. I remember that guy who said he was going to bomb the tent. If someone really listened to the poor guy they would realize that he wasn't serious. To me it sounded as though he just wanted desperately to fit in. I know that people there like to try to intimidate any one they can. They like to feel important, and show their over inflated egos. One of my goals in life is to understand why people feel that it's important to come across to others as though they don't have any flaws.
So watch it and let me know what you thought of the program.

hey irene, i watched some of it and it really was interesting. i missed the part you were in, sorry about that.
as has been stated, for some of us the circus is verbotten. the way big cats/elephants/etc are tortured in the 'big' circus make us want to cry. i could tell that at your circus the 'owners' of the horses and dogs, in their own way, loved the animals. but.........always a but. i'm an animal rights guy and believe all animals deserve to be free from human interference except in extraordinary cases. so, i won't watch any more footage.
i'm glad you loved your years at bac. no doubt you met some truly wonderful people. it's just not what some of us would want to be involved with.
as you may have noticed, most of w.p. inhabitants do not care at all about animal rights. many of them are probably watching bac at this very moment !
best to you.

I think you and I are the only people on here that care about animals.

Define "care about animals". Do you mean the literal caring about animals, because a lot of people do that. Dogs and other pets are amazing. However, if you mean hardcore animal rights as danandlouie mentioned, yeah, not a whole lot of people would go with that assumption, mainly because meat just tastes too good!
Back on topic, I haven't seen the show, as I don't really watch PBS except for The Red Green Show. And if I get the show on DVD for Christmas, I may stop watching it on TV.
I, too, like animals. But I absolutely adore dogs. That's another reason for my feelings about working at the circus.
A lot of people who live in trailers had dogs. It was great to see them interact with one another. You would be able to see the personalities of each of them while they were playing. One of my favorites is Godiva, a chocolate lab. A personality like that for a child would be overwhelming for a parent. She gave the impression that every dog, any dog, was her friend. Even ones who were walking outside the gate past her house. Godiva also didn't care about sharing anything that hers. Most dogs are very protective of their possessions. Not her. Any dog could take her toys, eat her food and she didn't care.
I also loved seeing the different cliques get together. Yeah, the dogs, like humans, created their own little cliques. Most of the time it was the size of the animal that was the common characteristic.
One day Thomas aka TomTom went to Godiva's house to eat her food. He just walked into the trailer as though it was his home. There was a wife of one of the executives watching all of this. She actually said that it was a rude of him to just to enter someone's house uninvited. Did she really think that dogs understood etiquette?
